Ed Courtney Jr.
Edward Henry Joseph Courtney (1905-1986) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s and 1930s. Background Ed Courtney Jr. was the son of the noted pioneer Australian rugby league player, Tedda Courtney and brother of Harry Courtney Playing career Courtney started his career at Western Suburbs during his father's last year at the club, making them the only known father and son combination ever to play together in the NSWRFL. Courtney went on to play five seasons at the Western Suburbs between 1924 and 1929. Penshurst () is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Penshurst is located 17 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the St George area. Penshurst features low to medium-density housing. It has a predominantly older population however it is increasingly being populated by a new generation of migrant families who are attracted by its proximity to Hurstville. History Penshurst was named after Penshurst, Kent, England. The Western Suburbs Magpies (legal name: Western Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club Ltd) are an Australian rugby league football club based in the western suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales. Formed in 1908, Wests, as they are commonly referred to, were one of the nine foundation clubs of the first New South Wales Rugby League competition in Australia. The club, as a sole entity, departed the top-flight competition in 1999 after forming a 50–50 joint venture with Balmain Tigers to form the Wests Tigers. Tedda Courtney
Ed "Tedda" Courtney (1885–1957) was a pioneer Australian rugby league footballer and coach. He played club football for North Sydney, Western Suburbs and representative football for the New South Wales state and Australian national sides. He is considered one of the nation's finest footballers of the 20th century. Born in Townsville, Courtney was one of six brothers who all played for North Sydney. His brothers Raymond and Robert died in World War I. He was a wharfie throughout his working life and was renowned for his fearless tackling style and ability to harass the opposition with his defence. Harold William Herbert 'Harry' Courtney (1908-1936) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s. A son of the rugby league legend Tedda Courtney and brother of Ed Courtney Jr., Harry played two years of first grade rugby league before his premature death. He joined the St. George club for one season before joining Canterbury-Bankstown to be coached by his famous father in 1935.
