Ed Adams (sailor)
Edward K. Adams, known as Ed Adams, is an American Sailing (sport), sailor in the Star (keelboat), Star, Snipe (dinghy), Snipe, and Laser (dinghy), Laser classes. He was named US Sailor of the Year Awards, US Sailor of the Year in 1987 and 1991. In the Laser (dinghy), Laser class, 1975 US national champion, and 1976 bronze medal at the Laser World Championship. At college, he won in 1977 the ICSA Coed Dinghy National Championship with the University of Rhode Island, and was named All-American. Adams won the Snipe North American Championship, North American Championship five times (1981, 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1993) and the United States Snipe National Championship, United States National Championship twice (1986 and 1991) in the Snipe (dinghy), Snipe class. Sailing (sport)
The sport of sailing involves a variety of competitive sailing formats that are sanctioned through various sailing federations and yacht clubs. Racing disciplines include matches within a fleet of sailing craft, between a pair thereof or among teams. Additionally, there are specialized competitions that include setting speed records. Racing formats include both closed courses and point-to-point contests; they may be in sheltered waters, coast-wise or on the open ocean. Most competitions are held within defined classes or ratings that either entail one type of sailing craft to ensure a contest primarily of skill or rating the sailing craft to create classifications or handicaps. Ed Baird
Phillip Edward "Ed" Baird (born May 17, 1958) is an American sailor. He was a coach of the 1995 America's Cup-winning Team New Zealand and a helmsman for the 2007 America's Cup-winning Alinghi syndicate. Growing up in Florida, Baird raced in the Optimist class at junior level, before moving onto other dinghies. He won the World Laser Championships in 1980 and the World J/24 Championships in 1983. Coaching career Baird joined Team New Zealand as a coach for the 1995 America's Cup, guiding the syndicate to New Zealand's first ever Cup win. In the same year, he won the World Match Racing Championships, and was named the US's Yachtsman of the Year. In 1999, he skippered ''Young America'' in the Louis Vuitton series to determine the challenger for the following year's America's Cup, but the syndicate's challenge faltered when one of its two yachts nearly sank in a race against a Japanese team. Snipe Class Sailors
A snipe is any of about 26 wading bird species in three genera in the family Scolopacidae. They are characterized by a very long, slender bill, eyes placed high on the head, and cryptic/camouflaging plumage. The ''Gallinago'' snipes have a nearly worldwide distribution, the ''Lymnocryptes'' snipe is restricted to Asia and Europe and the ''Coenocorypha'' snipes are found only in the outlying islands of New Zealand. National Sailing Hall Of Fame
The National Sailing Hall of Fame is a nonprofit educational organization that promotes sailing and racing by recognizing individuals who have contributed to the sport, highlighting sailing's contribution to the American culture; and demonstrating its value as a hands-on tool for teaching math and science. The organization was established in 2005. Museum The National Sailing Hall of Fame was originally housed in the Captain Burtis House, located on the City Dock in Annapolis, Maryland.
