Ebenezer Erskine Pressly
Ebenezer Erskine Pressly (December 23, 1808 – 1860) was the first president of Erskine Theological Seminary and Erskine College, beginning his service in 1838. Early life and family Pressly was born on December 23, 1808, in the lower part of Abbeville District, South Carolina. He was the youngest son of William and Elizabeth Hearst Pressly. He lived in Cedar Springs, South Carolina. In 1824, Pressly entered Miami University at Oxford, Ohio, at the age of 16; he graduated in 1826. He went on to study theology under Dr. John T. Pressly. Pressly was installed as pastor of the Generostee and Due West Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (A.R.P.) congregations on August 7, 1830. He gave up the position at Generostee in 1838, but continued to serve as pastor of the Due West church for another 30 years, during his tenure as president of the college. Erskine Theological Seminary
Erskine Theological Seminary is an institution of graduate theological and pastoral education. The Seminary is based in Due West, South Carolina, United States, and also offers classes at a second degree-granting campus in Columbia, South Carolina. Erskine Seminary operates an extension site in Greenville, South Carolina. Erskine College is a private Christian college in Due West, South Carolina. It is an undergraduate liberal arts college and a graduate theological seminary. The college was founded in 1839 by the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Its sports teams compete in NCAA Division II as a member of Conference Carolinas. Cedar Springs Historic District
Cedar Springs Historic District is a historic district in Abbeville and Greenwood Counties in South Carolina. It has three contributing properties. It is located at the intersection of Abbeville County Road 33, Greenwood County Road 112, and Greenwood County Road 47. The buildings were built between 1820 and 1856. Stagecoach Inn Stagecoach Inn is a two-story log building that was built around 1820. The building has a gabled, standing-seam metal roof. The porch along the original facade has been enclosed. This building has been altered. Its log walls are covered with shiplap siding. It is believed to have been a stop on a stagecoach line. Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church
The Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (ARPC), as it exists today, is the historical descendant of the Synod of the South, a Synod of the Associate Reformed Church. The original Associate Reformed Church resulted from a merger of the Associate Presbytery ( from the Seceder tradition of the 18th century) and most of the Reformed Presbytery ( from the Covenanter tradition of the 17th century) in Philadelphia in 1782. The northern Synods eventually merged with the forebearers of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Due West is a town in Abbeville County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,247 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Erskine College and Dixie High School. History Some say the name is a mispronunciation of "DeWitt's Corner", while others believe the town was due west on a pioneer trail. The Treaty of Dewitt's Corner, a historic peace negotiation in May 1777 with the Cherokee Indians, was signed in Due West. As a result of the treaty, the Cherokee peoples broke into two factions. Little Mountain is a town in Newberry County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 291 at the 2010 census. The town took its name from nearby Little Mountain. History The mountain is a monadnock, which is an isolated mountain or rock that has resisted the process of erosion and stands alone in an otherwise flat area. Presbyterianism has had a presence in the United States since colonial times and has exerted an important influence over broader American religion and culture.
