In the 1920s it had well over one thousand member and twenty departments. Pearl Jane Pearson Brison was an organizer and served as a president. The chapter closed in 2017. Women's Club
The woman's club movement was a social movement that took place throughout the United States that established the idea that women had a moral duty and responsibility to transform public policy. While women's organizations had always been a part of United States history, it was not until the Progressive era that it came to be considered a movement. The first wave of the club movement during the progressive era was started by white, middle-class, Protestant women, and a second phase was led by African-American women. These clubs, most of which had started out as social and literary gatherings, eventually became a source of reform for various issues in the U.S. Both African-American and white women's clubs were involved with issues surrounding education, temperance, child labor, juvenile justice, legal reform, environmental protection, library creation and more. Ebell Society
The Ebell Society was a woman's club with its first chapter in Oakland, California. It was founded in 1876 and was originally called the International Academy for the Advancement of Women. The club's purpose was the advancement of women in cultural, industrial and intellectual pursuits. After feminist Adrian John Ebell's early death in 1877 at age 37 the International Academy for the Advancement of Women renamed their club to honor him. Other chapters formed in California. From 1907 to 1959 the Oakland chapter had a club house built in the Tudor Revival style located at 1440 Harrison Street. That building was destroyed by fire in 1959. The original Oakland chapter disbanded in 2011. Adelaide Tichenor
Adelaide M. Tichenor (1845–1924) was a civic leader in Long Beach, California. She was the founder and first president of the Ebell of Long Beach. She is best known for donating her estate to establish the Tichenor Clinic for Children, fulfilling her desire to provide care to children with chronic orthopedic disabilities, regardless of their ability to pay. Biography Tichenor was born in Ravenna, Ohio. Tichenor received her degree from Oberlin College and went on to study at St. Louis Normal College (in Missouri) and Massachusetts Normal Art School. She worked as a teacher in Boston and St. Louis before moving to Redlands, California to take a teaching job in 1878. In 1895 she moved to Long Beach after a period of traveling. She remained there for the remainder of her life, working on the management of properties in the area. Pearl Jane Pearson Brison was a contralto and teacher of singing on the Board of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. She was also an organizer and leader of women's clubs. Early life Pearl Jane Pearson was born on December 1, 1881, in Florida, the daughter of John W. Pearson and Sarah Mattingly. Career Pearl Brison was a teacher of singing. She served on the board of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. For five years she was the Choir Director of the Atlantic Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church. She served as president of Woman's City Club and Ebell of Long Beach. Ebell of Long Beach, one of the largest women's clubs in Southern California, was organized November 16, 1896, with seventeen charter members. The Ebell of the 1920s had well over one thousand member and twenty departments. Brison was vice-president of the Camp Fire Girls, a local organization.
