Ebberston Railway Station
Ebberston railway station was situated on the North Eastern Railway's Pickering to Seamer branch line. It served the villages of Allerston, Ebberston and Wilton. The station opened to passenger traffic on 1 May 1882, and closed on 3 June 1950. The station has been restored completely, with track laid along the platform. Allerston
Allerston is a village and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England, about east of Pickering. According to the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 309, reducing slightly to 302 at the 2011 Census. The parish church, originally dedicated to St Mary, is now dedicated to St John and is a grade II* listed building. Overview During the 1930s, unemployed men were set to work in Dalby Forest, breaking ground, building tracks, and undertaking other heavy labour. The men lived in a work camp in Low Dalby, which was one of a number of so-called Instructional Centres run by the Ministry of Labour in order to 'harden' young men who had been out of work for some time. By 1938, the Ministry was operating 35 Instructional Centres across Britain, with a total capacity of over 6,000 places. Ryedale
Ryedale is a non-metropolitan district in North Yorkshire, England. It is in the Vale of Pickering, a low-lying flat area of land drained by the River Derwent. The Vale's landscape is rural with scattered villages and towns. It has been inhabited continuously from the Mesolithic period. North Eastern Railway (UK)
The North Eastern Railway (NER) was an English railway company. It was incorporated in 1854 by the combination of several existing railway companies. Later, it was amalgamated with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway at the Grouping in 1923. Its main line survives to the present day as part of the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh. Unlike many other pre-Grouping companies the NER had a relatively compact territory, in which it had a near monopoly. That district extended through Yorkshire, County Durham and Northumberland, with outposts in Westmorland and Cumberland. The only company penetrating its territory was the Hull & Barnsley, which it absorbed shortly before the main grouping. Forge Valley Line
The Forge Valley Line was a 16 mile long branch of the North Eastern Railway between Seamer (near Scarborough, North Yorkshire) and Pickering. The line was intended to link Scarborough with Pickering. It opened in 1882 and closed in 1950, with the exception of a stretch from Pickering to Thornton Dale which remained open for quarry traffic until 1963. The line did not pass through Forge Valley, but the station in the village of West Ayton was named after it to avoid confusion with another station—Great Ayton—already owned by the North Eastern Railway. Ebberston
Ebberston is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Ebberston and Yedingham in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England, and is east from the county town of Northallerton. In 1961 the parish had a population of 466. History Ebberston used to be in the Wapentake of Pickering Lythe. A cairn north-east from the village is dedicated to Alfrid, King of Northumberland, who supposedly sought sanctuary in a cave here before being removed to Little Driffield where he died. Between 1882 and 1950 the village was served by Ebberston railway station at Allerston, and on the Forge Valley Line between Scarborough and Pickering. Thornton Dale Railway Station
Thornton Dale railway station was situated on the North Eastern Railway's Pickering to Seamer branch line. It served the village of Thornton-le-Dale in North Yorkshire, England. The station opened to passenger traffic on 1 May 1882, and closed on 3 June 1950. The trains first arrived in the village in 1839 but the Pickering-Scarborough branch was not completed here until 1882. After regular service began, some agricultural workers left the area on the train, seeking paid jobs elsewhere. The station remained open for freight traffic to Pickering after the rest of the Forge Valley Line was closed and pulled up. A daily train took limestone (brought by lorry from a quarry north of the village) to Pickering from where it was taken forwards to Skinningrove Ironworks. Unfortunately the quarry company lost the contract to supply the ironworks and this traffic ceased by 1964.
