Easy Pickings
''Easy Pickings'' is a 1927 silent film mystery or 'old dark house' story directed by George Archainbaud and starring Anna Q. Nilsson and Kenneth Harlan. It is based on a play written by Paul A. Cruger and William A. Burton. Zack Williams plays the stereotypical Negro servant who mugs his way through the film in an exaggeratedly nervous manner. Comedic actor Billy Bevan plays the detective in the film in a more-serious-than-usual manner, and later went on to appear in ''Dracula's Daughter'' (1936) and ''The Invisible Man Returns'' (1940). Lead actress Nilsson emigrated from Sweden to Hollywood to appear in a number of silent films, but her career could not survive the coming of sound films. Cameraman Van Enger had photographed the 1925 Lon Chaney classic ''The Phantom of the Opera'', and years later would handle the camerawork on ''Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein'' (1948). George Archainbaud
George Archainbaud (May 7, 1890 – February 20, 1959) was a French-American film and television director. Biography In the beginning of his career he worked on stage as an actor and manager. He came to the United States in January 1914, and started his film career as an assistant director to Emile Chautard at the World Film Company in Fort Lee, New Jersey. In 1917 he made his own directorial debut '' As Man Made Her''. During the next three and a half decades he directed over one hundred films. After the beginning of the 1950s he moved to television. While working at RKO Radio Pictures in the beginning of the 1930s, he showed some artistic and skillful eye with many of his films. Cineteca Nazionale is a film archive located in Rome, Italy. It was founded in 1949. By law it manages the so-called legal deposit, with the task of collecting, preserving and disseminating the productions of Italian cinema. It is the only Italian film library that enjoys the right of mandatory legal deposit of all films produced and co-produced in Italy and registered in the Public Film Register held by the SIAE. History Established in 1949, based in Rome, the Cineteca Nazionale preserves all the films of Italian nationality produced since then. It arose from the archival heritage of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, which in 1943, had been removed by the Nazi occupiers, losing unique materials. Gertrude Howard (October 13, 1892 – September 30, 1934) was an American actress of the silent and early sound film eras. Biography Born in 1892, Howard performed in the chorus of ''The Wife Hunters'' (1911) on Broadway. She broke into films in 1925, appearing in ''The Circus Cyclone'', directed by Albert Rogell. In 1927, she played the wife of Uncle Tom in ''Uncle Tom's Cabin''. In 1927, ''The Pittsburgh Courier'' stated that she was the "highest salaried colored actress in Hollywood". She appeared mostly in minor or supporting film roles, such as Queenie in the original version of ''Show Boat'' (1929), and Martha in Christy Cabanne's ''Conspiracy''. Her appearance as Beulah Thorndyke in ''I'm No Angel'' (1933), led to her being forever linked to Mae West with the famous line, "Beulah, peel me a grape".
