Eastern Townships
The Eastern Townships (french: Cantons de l'Est) is an historical administrative region in southeastern Quebec, Canada. It lies between the St. Lawrence Lowlands and the American border, and extends from Granby in the southwest, to Drummondville in the northeast. Since 1987, most of the area is within the administrative region Estrie, and the term Eastern Townships is now used in tourist literature. The name derives from there also being western townships in Ontario. History Before European colonization the area was inhabited by the Abenaki, as attested by many toponyms such as Lake Memphremagog and Massawippi River. Bury is a municipality in Le Haut-Saint-François Regional County Municipality in the Estrie region of Quebec, Canada. Bury is home to a Canada Day celebration which is well known in the Estrie region and which draws in triple the town's population for a parade and events in the park. The school board was formerly known as the ''Chateauguay Valley English Protestant School Board'' until the Province of Quebec opted for linguistic, rather than Roman Catholic and Protestant, school boards. Alexander Galt Regional High School (AGRHS), in Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada, is an English-language secondary school which opened in 1969. It provides education to 1,150 secondary 1-5 students in the southeastern region of the Eastern Townships. (There are similar English-language regional high schools in Richmond and Cowansville.) Waterloo, Quebec
Waterloo ( 2021 population 4,920) is a city in the Canadian province of Quebec. It is included in La Haute-Yamaska Regional County Municipality, in the administrative area of Estrie. Completely encircled by the township of Shefford, this residential city is located within the Eastern Townships, about ninety kilometers east of Montreal. History The town was first settled in 1793 by Ezekiel Lewis, an English Loyalist supporter who was originally from Marlborough, New Hampshire. He named his location Lewis Falls and after 9 years, Captain Lewis sold his lot and moved a short distance away. The land was purchased by William Lamoure, a merchant from St-Armand who then sold it to Lazare Letourneau who in turn sold it to Hezekiah Robinson in 1822. Sutton, Quebec
Sutton is a town in southwestern Quebec. It is part of the Brome-Missisquoi Regional County Municipality in the administrative region of the Estrie. The population as of the Canada 2021 Census was 4,548. Historically, Sutton is considered to be part of the Eastern Townships. History Like many other towns and villages in the Eastern Townships, Sutton became home to many United Empire Loyalists, following the American Revolution. In 1799 the first recorded Loyalists immigrated to the area, among them Richard Shepherd, originally of New Hampshire. During the 19th century, new buildings were erected to serve the town's growing population, among them a school in 1808 (on the road linking the town to nearby Abercorn) as well as the town hall built in 1859.
