Western Suburbs Magpies
The Western Suburbs Magpies (legal name: Western Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club Ltd) are an Australian rugby league football club based in the western suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales. Formed in 1908, Wests, as they are commonly referred to, were one of the nine foundation clubs of the first New South Wales Rugby League competition in Australia. The club, as a sole entity, departed the top-flight competition in 1999 after forming a 50–50 joint venture with Balmain Tigers to form the Wests Tigers. The club currently fields sides in the NSW State Cup (Canterbury Cup), Ron Massey Cup (Opens), S.G. Ball Cup (Under 18's) and Harold Matthews Cup (Under 16's) competitions. Bye (sports)
In sport, a bye is the preferential status of a player or team that is automatically advanced to the next round of a tournament, without having to play an opponent in an early round. In knockout (elimination) tournaments they can be granted either to reward the highest ranked participant(s) or assigned randomly, to make a working bracket if the number of participants is not a power of two (e.g. 16 or 32). In round-robin tournaments, usually one competitor gets a bye in each round when there are an odd number of competitors, as it is impossible for all competitors to play in the same round. However, over the whole tournament, each plays the same number of games as well as sitting out for the same number of rounds. The "Berger Tables" used by FIDE for chess tournaments, provide pairings for even numbered pools and simply state that "Where there is an odd number of players, the highest number counts as a bye." Harold Horder
Harold Norman Horder (23 February 1894 – 21 August 1978) was an Australian rugby league player. He was a national and state representative player whose club career was with South Sydney and North Sydney between 1912 and 1924. Regarded as one of the greatest wingers to play the game, from 1924 until 1973 his 152 career tries was the NSWRFL record. Playing career Born in Surry Hills, New South Wales, Horder played 86 games for Souths between 1912–1919 and 1924, 31 games for New South Wales, 13 Test matches for Australia. After following his brother Clarence "Spot" Horder to South Sydney, Harold, in his first game, stepped and swerved through the entire Glebe team in a 90 metre dash to score one of the greatest individual tries in rugby league history. George Agar (rugby League)
William George Agar (7 October 1902 – 17 July 1966) was a rugby league footballer in Australia's leading competition - the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL). Agar played 15 matches for the Eastern Suburbs club in the 1923–24 seasons. A Centre, Agar played in the 1923 premiership winning side. Cecil "Cyril" Abotomey MBE (1902 – 20 December 1980) was an Australian rugby league footballer for the Eastern Suburbs club of the New South Wales Rugby League competition. Playing career Abotomey was a Paddington junior in Rugby League and Cricket and also played junior Australian rules football for the Double Bay side. Arthur Oxford
Arthur Thomas Oxford (1894–1980) was an Australian rugby league footballer, a state and national representative whose club career was played with the Eastern Suburbs club and South Sydney from 1915 to 1929. Club career A noted point scorer, Oxford played with South Sydney for 7 seasons between 1915 and 1921. He won a premiership with Souths in NSWRL season 1918. Oxford then switched to Eastern Suburbs for another 7 seasons between 1922 and 1929, winning the premiership with them in NSWRL season 1923. In 1920 he kicked a then-record 23 successive goals in club matches for South Sydney Rabbitohs.
