Castine, Maine
Castine ( ) is a town in Hancock County in eastern Maine.; John Faragher. ''Great and Nobel Scheme''. 2005. p. 68. The population was 1,320 at the 2020 census. Castine is the home of Maine Maritime Academy, a four-year institution that graduates officers and engineers for the United States Merchant Marine and marine related industries. Approximately 1000 students are enrolled. During the French colonial period, Castine was the southern tip of Acadia and served as the regional capital between 1670 and 1674. During the 17th and early 18th century, New France defined the Kennebec River as the southern boundary of Acadia, which put Castine within Acadia. The town is named after Jean-Vincent d'Abbadie de Saint-Castin. Maine Maritime Academy
Maine Maritime Academy (Maine Maritime or MMA) is a public college focused on maritime training and located in Castine, Maine. The academy was established by the 90th Maine Legislature on March 21, 1941. Unlike federal service academies, a congressional recommendation is not required to attend this state school. Students are not obligated to go to sea or into the military after graduation, and a large portion of the graduating class chooses shore-side employment, often in maritime related fields or the power generation industry. Maine Maritime Academy is one of six, non-federal, maritime training colleges in the United States and one of only two that fields a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) unit. Frances Lewis Brackett Damon
Frances Brackett Damon (, Brackett; pen name, Percy Larkin; May 21, 1857 – December 13, 1939) was an American writer of poetry, short stories, essays, playlets, and novels. She was also an editor of the literary magazines, ''The Quiet Hours'' and ''The Tally Ho''. She wrote many short stories for young persons, and some reform correspondence. Among her works are the poetry collection, ''The Bodfish Road'' (1901), the novel, ''Idlewise'', the novelette, ''A Daughter of Pharaoh'', and a long poem, “The Wind-Flower". Her songs were probably the best known of her verse, several having been used officially by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) and two at least having been adopted by foreign countries and sung at World WCTU conventions. Effie Hinckley Ober
Effie Hinckley Ober Kline (1843 – February 15, 1927) was an American opera manager and booking agent. She founded the Boston Ideal Opera Company (later known as "The Bostonians") in 1879. Early life Effie Hinckley Ober was born in Sedgwick, Maine, and brought up in Blue Hill, the daughter of Samuel Ober and Mary Peters Hinckley Ober. Through her mother she was descended from Joseph Wood, co-founder of Blue Hill, and was herself a co-founder of Blue Hill's summer colony. Career Ober was a secretary at a lecture bureau in Boston as a young woman. In time, she owned a theatrical agency, the Roberts Lyceum Bureau. She founded the Boston Ideal Opera Company (later known as "The Bostonians") in 1879, with Adelaide Phillipps and Myron W. Whitney among the cast members.
