Eastern Goldfields
The Eastern Goldfields is part of the Western Australian Goldfields in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, covering the present and former gold-mining area east of Perth. Extent and name origin The region encompasses the towns of Kalgoorlie, Boulder, Coolgardie, Kambalda, Southern Cross and other smaller settlements within this area. The name is derived in two parts: ''Eastern'' in relation to its location from Perth, and ''Goldfields'' as the name suggests comes from the mining of gold in the region. The Western Australian Goldfields is a term for areas in Western Australia that have had significant areas of gold mining occur. Kalgoorlie Miner
''The Kalgoorlie Miner'' (commonly known as ''The Miner'') is a daily newspaper circulating in the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Goldfields-Esperance region, in Western Australia. It is published Monday to Saturday by Hocking & Co. Pty Ltd in Kalgoorlie and printed by Colourpress Pty Ltd in East Victoria Park. ''The West Australian'' and ''The Kalgoorlie Miner'' are the only two newspapers in Western Australia produced daily. It is also part of the West Regional network. Australian Gold Rushes
During the Australian gold rushes, starting in 1851, significant numbers of workers moved from elsewhere in Australia and overseas to where gold had been discovered. Gold had been found several times before, but the colonial government of New South Wales (Victoria did not become a separate colony until 1 July 1851) had suppressed the news out of the fear that it would reduce the workforce and so destabilise the economy. Eumillipes Persephone
''Eumillipes'' is a genus of millipede in the family Siphonotidae. It contains a single species, ''E. persephone'', known from the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. The species was first collected in 2020, discovered in three drill holes, living at depths of between and . Etymology Its generic name, ''Eumillipes'', means "true millipede" (or "true thousand feet"), referring to its possession of over 1,000 legs; its specific name, ''persephone'', alludes to the Greek goddess of the same name, who was the queen of the underworld, in reference to its subterranean lifestyle. Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School
Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School is a comprehensive public co-educational high day and boarding school, located in Kalgoorlie, a regional centre located in the Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia. Along with Eastern Goldfields College the school was formerly known as Eastern Goldfields Senior High School until the campuses were separated. History The school was established in 2006 and caters for students from Year 7 to Year 10. Paul Matthews was the inaugural principal and was followed by Terry Martino in 2010. Terry Martino moved to Northam Senior High School in 2013 and was replaced by the deputy principal Vicki Bogensperger. The current principal is Douglas Dearle, since 2020. Early in 2012 the school received a commendation award from the local chamber of commerce. Ghost Towns Of The Goldfields Of Western Australia
The Goldfields region of Western Australia has an extensive array of active and historical mining operations and towns. Some of the towns listed here were developed and abandoned within a short space of time in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Eastern Goldfields College
Eastern Goldfields College is a public co-educational high day school, located in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. It is located on the Curtin University campus in Kalgoorlie and shares many facilities with the University. The College accepts year 11 and 12 students from across the Goldfields region. History The school was formerly a part of Eastern Goldfields Senior High School, but the school split in 2006 onto two separate campuses. The original site on Boomerang Crescent became Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School with classes for years 7-10. Senior students were moved to the local Curtin University campus and the students benefited from the high quality university facilities that were made available to them, particularly in the areas of trade and hospitality. Katharine Susannah Prichard (4 December 18832 October 1969) was an Australian author and co-founding member of the Communist Party of Australia. Early life Prichard was born in Levuka, Fiji in 1883 to Australian parents. She spent her childhood in Launceston, Tasmania, then moved to Melbourne, where she won a scholarship to South Melbourne College. Goldfields Water Supply Scheme
The Goldfields Water Supply Scheme is a pipeline and dam project that delivers potable water from Mundaring Weir in Perth to communities in Western Australia's Eastern Goldfields, particularly Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The project was commissioned in 1896 and completed in 1903. The pipeline continues to operate today, supplying water to over 100,000 people in over 33,000 households as well as mines, farms and other enterprises. Water scarcity During the early 1890s, thousands of settlers had travelled into the barren and dry desert centre of Western Australia seeking gold, but the existing infrastructure for the supply of water was non-existent, and an urgent need arose.
