The East Regional League (currently named the BT East League for sponsorship reasons) is one of three Scottish Regional Leagues operated by the Scottish Rugby Union, which play at a level below that of the Scottish National Leagues structure. Originally, these divisions were district leagues under the jurisdiction of the Edinburgh & District Union and the Scottish Borders Union. Rugby union, commonly known simply as rugby, is a close-contact team sport that originated at Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. Liberton RFC is a rugby union club based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Men's team currently plays in , the former Women's team which was controversially disbanded in 2023 played in . History The club was formed in 1963 by former pupils of Liberton High School in Edinburgh. In 2016, the club formed a women's side. Earlston RFC is a rugby union club, based at Earlston in the Scottish Borders (formerly Berwickshire). Earlston is in the of the East Regional League. It is the largest Scottish Borders club not to participate in the Border League. It takes part in the Borders Sevens Circuit each May, which is the oldest tournament of its kind in the world. Dalkeith RFC is a Scottish rugby union club based in Dalkeith, Midlothian. They are founding and continuing full members of the Scottish Rugby Union and play home games at Kings Park, Dalkeith. The club currently plays in . History The club was formed in 1898, playing its first match against Edinburgh Institution 2nd XV (now Stewart's Melville) on 14 October. Penicuik Rugby Club is a rugby football club in the Scottish Rugby Union, playing their home games at Public Park, Penicuik, Midlothian. Season 2015–16 saw the club become league champions of East Regional League Division Two, under the coaching duo of Mark Blair and Malcolm Clapperton.
