East Of Suez (film)
''East of Suez'' is a 1925 American silent drama film directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Pola Negri. It is based on a play, ''East of Suez'' (1922), by W. Somerset Maugham. The film was produced by Famous Players-Lasky and distributed by Paramount Pictures. Plot As described in a review in a film magazine, after being raised in England, Daisy Forbes (Negri) returns to China, the country of her birth. She discovers that her father has recently died and that she has become a social outcast, owing to the public revelation that the oriental nurse who raised her was actually her mother. Daisy is in love with George Tevis (Lowe), a nephew of the British Consul (Beery), but she is disappointed by George when he is persuaded by his uncle to renounce her in favor of a diplomatic career. Lee Tai (Kamiyama), a sinister mandarin, uses drugs and hypnotism to kidnap Daisy; she is rescued by Englishman Harry Anderson (Fellowes), whom she soon marries out of desperation. Raoul Walsh
Raoul Walsh (born Albert Edward Walsh; March 11, 1887December 31, 1980) was an American film director, actor, founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), and the brother of silent screen actor George Walsh. He was known for portraying John Wilkes Booth in the silent film ''The Birth of a Nation'' (1915) and for directing such films as the widescreen epic ''The Big Trail'' (1930) starring John Wayne in his first leading role, ''The Roaring Twenties'' starring James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart, '' High Sierra'' (1941) starring Ida Lupino and Humphrey Bogart, and ''White Heat'' (1949) starring James Cagney and Edmond O'Brien. Sōjin Kamiyama or just Sōjin (; 30 January 1884 – 28 July 1954) was a Japanese film actor. He appeared in more than 70 films between 1917 and 1954. He was the subject of a 1995 TV documentary by the Japanese film director Nobuhiro Suwa. He was born in Sendai, Japan and died in Tokyo, Japan. His wife was actress Uraji Yamakawa.
