African-American Neighborhood
African-American neighborhoods or black neighborhoods are types of ethnic enclaves found in many cities in the United States. Generally, an African American neighborhood is one where the majority of the people who live there are African American. Some of the earliest African-American neighborhoods were in New Orleans, Mobile, Atlanta, and other cities throughout the American South, as well as in New York City. In 1830, there were 14,000 " Free negroes" living in New York City. The formation of black neighborhoods is closely linked to the history of segregation in the United States, either through formal laws or as a product of social norms. Despite the formal laws and segregation, black neighborhoods have played an important role in the development of African-American culture. Black residential segregation has been declining in the United States and many black people are moving to white suburbs. Black people continue to live in poorer neighborhoods than white people and Americans ...

Although the common goal of public housing is to provide affordable housing, the details, terminology, definitions of poverty, and other criteria for allocation vary within different contexts. Public housing developments are classified as housing projects that are owned by a city's Housing authority or Federally subsidized public housing operated through HUD. Social housing is any rental housing that may be owned and managed by the state, by non-profit organizations, or by a combination of the two, usually with the aim of providing affordable housing. Social housing is generally rationed by a government through some form of means-testing or through administrative measures of housing need. One can regard social housing as a potential remedy for housing inequality. Private housing is a form of housing tenure in which the property is owned by an i ...

Redlining
In the United States, redlining is a discriminatory practice in which services (financial and otherwise) are withheld from potential customers who reside in neighborhoods classified as "hazardous" to investment; these neighborhoods have significant numbers of racial and ethnic minorities, and low-income residents. While the most well-known examples involve denial of credit and insurance, also sometimes attributed to redlining in many instances are: denial of healthcare and the development of food deserts in minority neighborhoods. In the case of retail businesses like supermarkets, the purposeful construction of stores impractically far away from targeted residents results in a redlining effect. Reverse redlining occurred when a lender or insurer targeted majority-minority neighborhood residents with inflated interest rates by taking advantage of the lack of lending competition relative to non-redlined neighborhoods. The effect also emerged when service providers artificially ...

East Liberty Station
East Liberty station was a passenger depot for the Pennsylvania Railroad located on its Main Line in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. The station existed from the mid-nineteenth century until 1963, when the last building was demolished. History In the late 1840s, the Pennsylvania Railroad sought to connect Philadelphia and Pittsburgh by rail via the state capital, Harrisburg, a route that eventually became known as its Main Line. The section passing through the area known as East Liberty (so named because it was part of the eastern grazing land—or "liberty"—outside Pittsburgh) was completed in 1851, but the entire Main Line connecting the eastern and western principal cities of Pennsylvania would not be completed for another year. By 1855, maps indicate that the railroad had established a station at East Liberty, near where the railroad tracks traversed what would become Penn Avenue. East Liberty, along with surrounding areas, was annexed to ...
