''East L.A. Breeze'' is the fifth studio album of the indie (music), indie group Brazzaville (US band), Brazzaville. For the first time this CD was released by a Soyuz Records sub-label Zakat in 2006. Until released by some Western record label, the album's been available only in Commonwealth of Independent States, CIS. All songs are written by David Arthur Brown, except "Zvezda po imeni Solntse (song), Star Called Sun" which features music by Viktor Tsoi (Виктор Цой), the leader of the Soviet rock band Kino (band), Kino (Кино). International availability On October 9, 2006 ''East L.A. Breeze'' was released in Spain on South China Sea Records, South China Sea / Discmedi. For North America, was released by Vendlus Records in late 2006. Packaging In July 2006, the album was reissued by Soyuz Records, Zakat/Soyuz in a digipak, digipack. Brazzaville (US Band)
Brazzaville is an American indie pop band founded in 1997 by David Brown. Brown was at one time Beck's saxophonist and took part in recording of ''Odelay'' and ''Midnite Vultures''. On May 7, 2009, David Brown officially announced the dissolution of the band, stating that he would henceforth be recording and releasing music under the name David Arthur Brown, albeit with "many of the wonderful musicians who have contributed to Brazzaville records." However, June 23, 2009, David once again announced that the band will continue to exist in parallel with a solo career. "Zvezda po imeni Solntse" () is a song by the Soviet rock band Kino from the album of the same name released in 1988. The song is generally considered to be one of Kino's most popular songs. It is popular among novice guitarists in Eastern Europe, and there are many cover versions. The song is broadcast daily by Russian radio stations. Cover versions The American indie pop band Brazzaville recorded a cover version of the song in English called "Star Called Sun" for their 2006 album, '' East L.A. Breeze''. The lyrics are not a direct translation, but are instead about the death of the singer's mother. Kino (band)
Kino (russian: Кино, lit=cinema, film, ) was a Soviet rock band formed in Leningrad in 1982, considered to be one of, if not the, greatest rock band in the history of Russian music. The band was co-founded and headed by Viktor Tsoi, who wrote the music and lyrics for almost all of the band's songs. Over the course of eight years, Kino released over 90 songs spanning over seven studio albums, as well as releasing a few compilations and live albums. The band's music was also widely circulated in the form of bootleg recordings through the underground magnitizdat distribution scene. Viktor Tsoi died in a car accident in 1990. Shortly after his passing, the band broke up after releasing their final album, consisting of songs that Tsoi and the group were working on in the months before his death. In 2019, the band announced a reunion with concerts planned in the fall of 2020 for the first time in 30 years, however they were later postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. ... Viktor Tsoi
Viktor Robertovich Tsoi (russian: Виктор Робертович Цой; ; 21 June 1962 – 15 August 1990) was a Soviet singer and songwriter who co-founded Kino, one of the most popular and musically influential bands in the history of Russian music. Born and raised in Leningrad (now known as Saint Petersburg), Tsoi started writing songs as a teenager. Throughout his career, Tsoi contributed a plethora of musical and artistic works, including ten albums. After Kino appeared and performed in the 1987 Soviet film ''Assa'', the band's popularity surged, triggering a period referred to as "Kinomania", and leading to Tsoi's leading role in the 1988 Kazakh new wave art film '' The Needle''. In 1990, after their high-profile concert at the Luzhniki Stadium, Tsoi briefly relocated to Latvia with bandmate Yuri Kasparyan to work on the band's next album. Indie Pop
Indie pop (also typeset as indie-pop or indiepop) is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. It originated from British post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated a thriving fanzine, Independent record label, label, and club and gig circuit. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free.
