East Kesteven Rural District
East Kesteven was a rural district in Lincolnshire, Parts of Kesteven from 1931 to 1974. It was formed under a County Review Order, by the merger of most of the Sleaford Rural District and the parish of Haceby from Grantham Rural District. Rural District
Rural districts were a type of local government area – now superseded – established at the end of the 19th century in England, Wales, and Ireland for the administration of predominantly rural areas at a level lower than that of the Administrative county, administrative counties.__TOC__ England and Wales In England and Wales they were created in 1894 (by the Local Government Act 1894) along with Urban district (Great Britain and Ireland), urban districts. Kesteven
The Parts of Kesteven ( or ) are a traditional division of Lincolnshire, England. This division had long had a separate county administration (quarter sessions), along with the two other Parts of Lincolnshire, Lindsey and Holland. Etymology The word ''Kesteven'' is supposed to have derived from two root words: the Celtic ' meaning wood (compare Modern Welsh ') and the Old Norse ', a meeting place. Local Government Act 1929
The Local Government Act 1929 was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that made changes to the Poor Law and local government in England and Wales. The Act abolished the system of poor law unions in England and Wales and their boards of guardians, transferring their powers to local authorities. It also gave county councils increased powers over highways, and made provisions for the restructuring of urban and rural districts as more efficient local government areas. Poor Law reform Under the Act all boards of guardians for poor law unions were abolished, with responsibility for public assistance transferred to Public Assistance Committees of county councils and county boroughs. The local authorities took over infirmaries and fever hospitals, while the workhouses became public assistance institutions. Sleaford was a rural district in Lincolnshire, Kesteven, Parts of Kesteven, England, from 1894 to 1931. It was created by the Local Government Act 1894 based on the Sleaford rural sanitary district. In 1931, under a Local Government Act 1929, County Review Order, it was abolished, with a small part going to West Kesteven Rural District, the parishes of Leadenham, Welbourn and Wellingore going to North Kesteven Rural District, and the larger part going to the East Kesteven Rural District. The Local Government Act 1972 (c. 70) is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that reformed local government in England and Wales on 1 April 1974. It was one of the most significant Acts of Parliament to be passed by the Heath Government of 1970–74. Its pattern of two-tier metropolitan and non-metropolitan county and district councils remains in use today in large parts of England, although the metropolitan county councils were abolished in 1986, and both county and district councils have been replaced with unitary authorities in many areas since the 1990s.
