East Bristol Jazz Club
{{No footnotes, date=January 2021 East Bristol Jazz Club is based in Bristol, England, and was formed in 2001 with the aim of supporting and bringing new jazz and new musicians to the Bristol community. The club had a residency at Seymours Club near Old Market before it moved to St George in 2006. It moved to The Cross Hands in Fishponds in 2007 and then to The Greenbank in Easton where it has been based since November 2009. The club runs regular 'jam' nights each month, usually the second Monday, and is being run by a number of notable local musicians including vocalist Nick Langston, keyboard player John Lambert, vocalist Will Grealish, saxophonist Simon Greening and trumpet player Walter Dirks. The jam nights and other special events feature a broad cross-section of Bristol's jazz musicians and occasional guests including Dennis Rollins, Gilad Atzmon and Sotho Sounds. Bristol
Bristol () is a city, ceremonial county and unitary authority in England. Situated on the River Avon, it is bordered by the ceremonial counties of Gloucestershire to the north and Somerset to the south. Bristol is the most populous city in South West England. Dennis Rollins
Dennis Rollins, (born 1964) is an English jazz trombonist, the founder and bandleader of BadBone and Co. Early life and career Dennis George Rollins was born in Birmingham, England, of Jamaican parents, and raised in Bentley, Doncaster, where he attended Don Valley High School. When he was 14 years old, he joined The Doncaster Youth Jazz Association, with which he studied and performed for some years before moving to London in 1987. Rollins has recorded, performed, and toured with a host of musicians and bands in jazz and pop, including Courtney Pine, and Maceo Parker,. In 1995 he formed his own jazz-funk band, Dee Roe, with which he performed at such venues as the Jazz Café, Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, the London Forum, and Brixton Academy. In 2000 he again formed a band, the quintet Dennis Rollins' BadBone and Co., launched at the Barbican Centre in March of that year, again specialising in funk-inflected jazz. Gilad Atzmon
Gilad Atzmon ( he, גלעד עצמון, ; born 9 June 1963) is a British jazz saxophonist, novelist, political activist, and writer. As a musician, he is best known as a saxophonist and bandleader. His instruments include the saxophone, accordion, clarinet, zurna and flute. Dubbed the "hardest working man in British jazz", Atzmon has been known to play over 100 dates a year. He has been bandleader, successively, of the Gilad Atzmon Quartet, the Spiel Acid Jazz Band and the Orient House Ensemble. Exploring identity through the folk forms of diverse cultures, his bands and other projects have recorded around 20 albums. Since 1998, he has also been a member of the English rock band, The Blockheads. He has played on albums by Pink Floyd and Robert Wyatt and collaborated with other musicians on their recordings. Sotho Sounds
Sotho Sounds are a band from Malealea, a village in south-west Lesotho. The members of Sotho Sounds are shepherds and built their instruments themselves. History Sotho Sounds recorded their debut album ''Sotho Sounds Malealea'', produced by Risenga Makondo, in 2003. The band sold the album on CDs at concerts. In July 2003 Sotho Sounds performed at WOMAD festival in the UK. In 2012 Sotho Sounds' album ''Junk Funk'' was released on Riverboat Records. Robin Denselow of ''The Guardian'' wrote of the album that "[Sotho Sounds'] approach may be rough and ready but their energy and enthusiasm are contagious." In a review of the album, ''The Independent'' compared Sotho Sounds favourably to Konono Nº1 and Staff Benda Bilili, who also play self-made instruments. That same year Sotho Sounds told Deutschlandfunk that most Basotho were more interested in western music than the traditional music that they play.
