East Bengal Club (field Hockey)
East Bengal Club is an Indian professional field hockey club located in Kolkata, West Bengal. It participates in various tournaments conducted by Hockey Bengal. The team plays its home matches mostly at the East Bengal Ground and also at the SAI Sports Complex at Salt Lake Stadium. The club participates in the Calcutta Hockey League and the Beighton Cup. The team have won fourteen major state titles as of the 2022 season, History East Bengal Club started their hockey section after the Indian Independence in 1947 and got affiliated with the Bengal Hockey Association (BHA). The Club participated in the Calcutta Hockey League and the Beighton Cup and were the fourth Indian hockey team to win the Calcutta Hockey League in the 1960 season. The club disbanded their hockey section in 2000, but was eventually revived after 21 years in 2021. In the next season in 2022, East Bengal won their tenth CHL title after 33 years. East Bengal Ground
The East Bengal Ground, also known as East Bengal–Aryan Ground, is the home stadium of East Bengal and Aryan. The stadium has a capacity of 23,500 people. It is one of the venues for Calcutta Football League. The stadium lies in the Kolkata Maidan area on the northern side of Fort William and it is near the Eden Gardens. The Esplanade metro station on the North-South Corridor of the Kolkata Metro is also nearby. History When East Bengal Club was formed in 1920, they used to play at the Kumortuli Park Ground in the initial days. In 1921, East Bengal Club started playing in the Calcutta Football League Second Division. Most of the matches were held at the Calcutta FC Ground. Gurbux Singh
Gurbux ("Gurbakhsh") Singh Grewal (born 11 February 1936) is a former Indian field hockey player who was a member of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 1964 Summer Olympics, the bronze medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics and the gold medal at the 1966 Asian Games. He was the joint captain of the Indian team at the 1968 Summer Olympics. He was also the coach of the Indian team at the 1976 Summer Olympics. For his outstanding contribution to the country in the field of sports, Gurbux received the Arjuna Award in 1966. Early life Gurbux Singh was born at Peshawar but grew up in Rawalpindi. Mohammed Shahid
Mohammed Shahid (14 April 1960 – 20 July 2016) was an Indian field hockey player. He is considered one of India's best to have played the game and was known for his dribbling skills. He was a member of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. He was awarded Arjuna Award in 1980–1981 and Padma Shri in 1986. Career Mohammed Shahid was born on 14 April 1960 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He made his first appearance for India in the junior team in 1979 at the Junior World Cup in France. Calcutta Hockey League is a field hockey league organized by Hockey Bengal (formerly the Bengal Hockey Association). The first edition was held in 1905. It is a division based league held at Kolkata and is the oldest field hockey league in India. Until the formation of the top division national leagues such as Premier Hockey League and Hockey India League post 2000s, the Calcutta Hockey League was the most competitive league in the country.
