East-West Link (Suriname)
The (northern) East-West Link (Dutch: ''Oost-Westverbinding'') is a road in Suriname between Albina in the eastern part of the country to Nieuw Nickerie in the western part, via the capital city of Paramaribo. The southern East-West Link connects Paramaribo with Apoera via Bitagron. Construction of the road link started in the 1960s. Overview Bridges In recent years, various ferries on the East-West Link route have been replaced with bridges. There is a bridge near Groot Henar spanning the Nickerie River. In 1980, a bridge was built on the Commewijne River near Stolkertsijver. Since 1999, the Coppename Bridge connects Jenny with Boskamp, and since 2000 the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge connects Paramaribo with Meerzorg. On the southern East-West Link, bailey bridges spanning the Coppename River and Nickerie River were built near Bitagron and Kamp 52 respectively. Nieuw Nickerie
Nieuw Nickerie. Retrieved 17 November 2009. is the third largest city in Suriname with a population estimated at . It is the capital city of the Nickerie district, and the terminus of the East-West Link. Nieuw Nickerie lies on the mouth of the Nickerie river on the Atlantic coast, opposite the mouth of the Corantijn river (Courantyne) and the Guyanese town of Corriverton (Springlands), to which a ferry service operates. A bridge between Suriname and Guyana is still being planned. Major Henk Fernandes Airport, also known as ''Nieuw Nickerie Airport'', is located near the city. Bailey Bridge
A Bailey bridge is a type of portable, pre-fabricated, truss bridge. It was developed in 1940–1941 by the British for military use during the Second World War and saw extensive use by British, Canadian and American military engineering units. A Bailey bridge has the advantages of requiring no special tools or heavy equipment to assemble. The wood and steel bridge elements were small and light enough to be carried in trucks and lifted into place by hand, without the use of a crane. The bridges were strong enough to carry tanks. Bailey bridges continue to be used extensively in civil engineering construction projects and to provide temporary crossings for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Tamanredjo
Tamanredjo ( Javanese : ꦠꦩꦤꦽꦗ lit. meaning : Prosperous Garden Village) is a resort and town in Suriname, located in the Commewijne District. Its population at the 2012 census was 6,601. Tamanredjo was founded in 1937 as village for Javanese immigrants. As of 2012, the Javanese still form the biggest ethnic group. Initiative For The Integration Of The Regional Infrastructure Of South America
The Initiative for the Integration of the Regional Infrastructure of South America (IIRSA) is a development plan to link South America's economies through new transportation, energy, and telecommunications projects. IIRSA investments are expected to integrate highway networks, river ways, hydroelectric dams and telecommunications links throughout the continent—particularly in remote, isolated regions—to allow greater trade and create a South American community of nations. The initiative was launched in late 2000 with the participation of the 12 countries of South America which form the Union of South American Nations. Jeep trail is a term originating in the United States to designate unpaved roads designed and maintained for use solely by high-clearance four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles, regardless of the vehicle manufacturer. Only the more difficult unpaved roads are considered jeep trails while gravel or dirt roads passable in conventional vehicles are simply unpaved roads. The word ''jeep'' in this usage is normally spelled with all lowercase letters, the brand name of Jeep being just one of many that is drivable on difficult road surfaces. South Drain, Suriname
South Drain, also Zuiddrain, is a town in western Suriname. Since the pavement of road section to Nieuw Nickerie, it is the final destination of the northern East-West Link. The European Union funded the reconstruction, which started in 2007, with 13.2 million euro. The section was opened on 30 April 2010. There is a jeep trail between South Drain and Apoera, connecting the Northern East-West Link with the Southern East-West Link. Contrary to earlier plans, the pavement of this road is not imminent. Suriname-Guyana border Since 1998, the CANAWAIMA ferry connects South Drain with Moleson Creek in Guyana. Uitkijk
Uitkijk is a village in the resort of Kampong Baroe in the Saramacca District of Suriname. The village is located on the Saramacca River. History The village started as a wood plantation, In 1778, a military outpost was established at Uitkijk, because of its strategic importance: all river traffic from Paramaribo heading west had to pass through Uitkijk. Between 1789 and 1793, the Boni War was fought against runaway slaves. 44 of the captured slaves were born in the forest, and resettled in Uitkijk.
