Earth Inferno (album)
''Earth Inferno'' is a mixed version of three live performances by Fields of the Nephilim which shares its name with a self-published book by occult artist Austin Osman Spare. The live venues used for the recordings were from the group's 1990 ''Sumerland'' tour at Wolverhampton Civic Hall (4 August), Brixton Academy (6 October) and Hamburg Sportshalle (6 November). The record was released in April 1991 by Beggars Banquet Records and peaked at number 39 in UK album charts. Fields of the Nephilim are an English gothic rock band formed in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, in 1984. The band's name refers to a Biblical race of angel-human hybrids known as the Nephilim. Gothic Rock
Gothic rock (also called goth rock or simply goth) is a style of rock music that emerged from post-punk in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The first post-punk bands which shifted toward dark music with gothic overtones include Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus, and the Cure. The genre itself was defined as a separate movement from post-punk. Gothic rock stood out due to its darker sound, with the use of primarily minor or bass chords, reverb, dark arrangements, or dramatic and melancholic melodies, having inspirations in gothic literature allied with themes such as sadness, nihilism, dark romanticism, tragedy, melancholy and morbidity. These themes are often approached poetically. Beggars Banquet Records
Beggars Banquet Records is a British independent record label. Beggars Banquet started as a chain of record shops owned by Martin Mills and Nick Austin and is part of the Beggars Group of labels. History In 1977, spurred by the prevailing DIY aesthetics of the British punk rock movement (then at the height of its popularity), Martin Mills and Nick Austin founded a record label to release records under the Beggars Banquet imprint. The first band on the label was the English punk group the Lurkers; the first release on the label was the Lurkers' 7" single "Shadow"/"Love Story". They also released the first solo "Duffo" album from Australian big-band vocalist Jeff Duff. Later in the decade and into the early 1980s, hits with Tubeway Army and Gary Numan secured the label's future. ''Elizium'' is the third studio album by English gothic rock band Fields of the Nephilim. It was released in September 1990 through record label Beggars Banquet. Background and release Using sensational spelling, the album was named after Elysium. The album was produced by Andy Jackson (recording engineer), also known for his work with Pink Floyd. The introduction for the third song of the album, "At the Gates of Silent Memory", features spoken lines by Aleister Crowley. The lines are excerpts from Crowley's poem "At Sea", recorded in 1920. Upon its release in late September 1990, ''Elizium'' peaked at number 22 in the UK albums chart. It was the last album Fields of the Nephilim recorded with what is regarded as their classic lineup of Carl McCoy, Tony Pettitt, Peter Yates, and Paul and Alexander "Nod" Wright. Artist's book Conceived as an anti-establishment reaction to the publicity surrounding his inclusion in the Royal Academy summer show in 1904, the book was developed over the remainder of that year and was eventually published in 1905. Austin Osman Spare
Austin Osman Spare (30 December 1886 – 15 May 1956) was an English artist and occultism, occultist who worked as both a draughtsman and a painter. Influenced by Symbolism (arts), symbolism and art nouveau his art was known for its clear use of line, and its depiction of monstrous and sexual imagery. In an occult capacity, he developed magical techniques including automatic writing, surrealist automatism#Automatic drawing and painting, automatic drawing and sigil (magic), sigilization based on his theories of the relationship between the conscious and unconscious self. Born into a working-class family in Holborn Viaduct, Snow Hill in London, Spare grew up in Smithfield, London, Smithfield and then Kennington, taking an early interest in art. Wolverhampton Civic Hall
The Halls Wolverhampton, formally known as Wolverhampton Civic Halls is a music venue in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England. It has been one of the most notable live music venues in the county for several decades. It is part of a complex also including Wulfrun Hall and the Slade Rooms (previously known as The Little Civic). The complex is owned by City of Wolverhampton Council, operated by AEG Presents and is a Grade II listed building. Construction and development The hall, which was designed by Lyons and Israel in the Classical style was completed in May 1938. Brixton Academy (originally known as the Astoria Variety Cinema, previously known as Carling Academy Brixton, currently named O2 Academy Brixton as part of a sponsorship deal with the O2 brand) is a mid-sized concert venue located in South West London, in the Lambeth district of Brixton.
