Earplay is a chamber music ensemble founded in the San Francisco Bay Area The San Francisco Bay Area, often referred to as simply the Bay Area, is a populous region surrounding the San Francisco, San Pablo, and Suisun Bay estuaries in Northern California. The Bay Area is defined by the Association of Bay Area Go ... in 1985. They describe their music as "lyrical and ferocious, modern and Romantic, finely honed and accessible." Earplay was founded in 1985 by a consortium of composers and performers. Each year, Earplay presents live concerts of challenging music by contemporary composers, including works commissioned specially for Earplay, which annually sponsors a competition for new compositions. Earplay
''Earplay'' was the longest-running of the formal series of radio drama anthologies on National Public Radio, produced by WHA in Madison, Wisconsin and heard from 1972 into the 1990s. It approached radio drama as an art form with scripts written by such leading playwrights as Edward Albee, Arthur Kopit, Archibald MacLeish and David Mamet. Airing in stereo, ''Earplay'' provided a showcase for original and adapted work. Eventually, the less-sustained successor series ''NPR Playhouse'' drew episodes from the ''Earplay'' run. Often presented by NPR member stations on a weekly basis, ''Earplay'' episodes were produced with much attention to recording technique and sound-effects. In 1975, it scored a triumph with ''Listening'', an original play written by Edward Albee for stereo radio, employing one speaker for one character and another speaker for another character. Chamber Music
Chamber music is a form of classical music that is composed for a small group of instruments—traditionally a group that could fit in a palace chamber or a large room. Most broadly, it includes any art music that is performed by a small number of performers, with one performer to a part (in contrast to orchestral music, in which each string part is played by a number of performers). However, by convention, it usually does not include solo instrument performances. Because of its intimate nature, chamber music has been described as "the music of friends". For more than 100 years, chamber music was played primarily by amateur musicians in their homes, and even today, when chamber music performance has migrated from the home to the concert hall, many musicians, amateur and professional, still play chamber music for their own pleasure. Mary Chun
Mary Chun is an American conductor based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is Music Director of the Cinnabar Theater and has been the conductor of Earplay since 2000. Chun earned her master's degree from San Francisco State University where she studied piano with Carlo Bussotti and conducting with Lászlo Varga. She served as Director of Musical Studies to Kent Nagano at the Opéra National de Lyon, assisting on his recording of Francis Poulenc's '' Dialogues of the Carmelites'' in 1992. She served on the music staff at the San Francisco Opera, helping prepare productions of ''Das Verratene Meer'' (1991) and '' The Death of Klinghoffer'' (1992). She later assisted on the company's 2002 production of Messiaen's ''Saint François d'Assise'' for which she also played the Ondes Martenot. Martha Callison Horst
Martha Callison Horst is an American composer. Her music has been performed by Earplay (new chamber music), Earplay, Alea III, the Empyrean Ensemble, the Fromm Players, Left Coast Ensemble, Ensemble Dal Niente, Dal Niente, Composers, Inc., members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Chicago Composers Consortium, and Music Beyond Performance: SoundImageSound V. Horst studied composition at Stanford University and the University of California, Davis. She is currently Professor of Composition and Music Theory in the Wonsook Kim Illinois State University College of Fine Arts, College of Fine Arts at Illinois State University. Furthermore, she serves as an Academic Senator representing the College of Fine Arts. In the fall of 2020, she was elected Secretary of the Academic Senate placing her on the Executive Committee with the University administration.
