History After his old early music band, New York Pro Musica, disbanded in 1974, Renz founded the Ensemble for Early Music, and founded the Grande Bande (also known as New York's Grande Bande of Original Instruments) as an offshoot of the Ensemble two years later. Both groups were affiliated with Renz's Early Music Foundation, which he had established in 1974. Lyrichord Discs
Lyrichord Discs is a record label specializing in world music and classical music. In 2015, Multicultural Media acquired the catalog of Lyrichord. History The label was founded in 1950 by Peter Fritsch, an Austrian immigrant who moved to America in the 1930s. In the 1940s, he worked as an executive at Musicraft Records before founding Lyrichord. Money for the new label came from his wife, Theresa, after she won a contest to write an advertising jingle. Eventually Fritsch turned the label over to his son, Nick, who ran it with his wife, Lesley Doyel. Lyrichord concentrated on classical music, early music, world music, and field recordings. According to the obituary of Fritsch in ''Billboard'', the label "became one of the first to publish the field-work recordings of anthropologists and ethnomusicologists. Nonesuch Records is an American record company and label owned by Warner Music Group, distributed by Warner Records (formerly called Warner Bros. Records), and based in New York City. Founded by Jac Holzman in 1964 as a budget classical label, Nonesuch has developed into a label that records critically acclaimed music from a wide range of genres. Robert Hurwitz was president of the company from 1984 to 2017. Frederick Renz
Frederick Renz is a conductor, director, and keyboardist specializing in Early Music spanning the medieval through the classical eras. He is the founder of the Early Music Foundation and directs its performing group Early Music New York, an internationally performing ensemble and artist in residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. Renz is also noted for his work in medieval drama, and has directed and produced works such as Daniel and the Lions and Le Roman de Fauvel based largely on his own musicological research. Education Renz received his undergraduate degree in piano performance at State University of New York at Fredonia. He completed a masters in harpsichord performance at Indiana University, where he also completed course work for a doctorate in conducting with Willi Apel and Julius Herford. New York Pro Musica
New York Pro Musica was a vocal and instrumental ensemble based in New York City, which specialized in Medieval and Renaissance early music, music. It was co-founded in 1952, under the name Pro Musica Antiqua, by Noah Greenberg, a choral director, and Bernard Krainis, a recorder (musical instrument), recorder player who studied with Erich Katz. Other prominent musicians who joined included Russell Oberlin (the first American countertenor) and Martha Blackman (the first American Viola da gamba, gambist) and Frederick Renz, who founded Early Music Foundation after Pro Musica disbanded. The ensemble is perhaps best known for reviving the medieval ''Play of Daniel'' in the 1950s, which has since become a popular liturgical drama among early music groups.
