Earl Mann (politician)
Earl W. Mann (June 8, 1886 – 1969) was a state legislator and columnist in Colorado. The Denver Public Library has a collection of his papers. He was born in Lyons, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and was badly injured by poison gas. He was treated at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver. He was first elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 1942 and served five consecutive terms. He was a Republican. He wrote newspaper columns. His columns expressed opposition to lynching and disbelief that legislation to make it a federal crime failed. He also wrote in opposition to the Alien Land Act. His February 19, 1944 column stated the act was "fascism appearing in a new suit of clothes, without bathing, permitting the noxious body odors to disclose its identity, and its subtle purpose: Japanese and then Negroes and Jews." Denver Public Library
The Denver Public Library is the public library system of the City and County of Denver, Colorado. The system includes the Denver Central Library, located in the Golden Triangle district of Downtown Denver, as well as 25 branch locations and two bookmobiles. The library's collection totals more than 2 million items, including books, reference materials, movies, music, and photographs. Of that total, more than 347,000 items are in specific collections including the Western History and Genealogy Department, Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library, and Reference Department holdings. Lyons, Iowa
Clinton is a city in and the county seat of Clinton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 24,469 as of 2020. Clinton, along with DeWitt (also located in Clinton County), was named in honor of the sixth governor of New York, DeWitt Clinton. Clinton is the principal city of the Clinton Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is coterminous with Clinton County. Clinton was incorporated on January 26, 1857. History Among the first settlers of European origin in the Clinton area was Elijah Buell, who built a log cabin on July 25, 1835, and in 1837, established the town of Lyons, named after the French city of the same name. Buell partnered with a John Baker in a successful ferry service across the Mississippi River, at a location called "the Narrows," between Lyons and what would become the city of Fulton, Illinois.
