Eagle Springs was a community situated 16 miles (26 km) southeast of Gatesville in Coryell County, Texas. The population reached 200 in 1884, but declined below 100 in the 1890s, and the few remaining public buildings were gradually discontinued in the 20th century; by the 1980s there were only a few scattered houses still standing.Smyrl 1995. Gatesville, Texas
Gatesville is a city in and the county seat of Coryell County, Texas, United States. Its population was 16,135 at the 2020 census. The city has five of the nine prisons and state jails for women operated by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. One of the facilities, the Mountain View Unit, has the state's death row for women. Gatesville is part of the Killeen–Temple–Fort Hood metropolitan statistical area. Geography The city is located northeast of the center of Coryell County at (31.436755, –97.735257), on the east side of the Leon River, part of the Brazos River watershed. The city is from Waco. It is midway between Austin and Fort Worth. U.S. Route 84 runs through the city, leading east to Waco and west to Goldthwaite. Texas State Highway 36 passes through the east side of the city, leading northwest to Hamilton and southeast to Temple. Coryell County, Texas
Coryell County ( ) is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 83,093. The county seat is Gatesville. The county is named for James Coryell, a frontiersman and Texas Ranger who was killed by Caddo Indians. Coryell County is part of the Killeen–Temple metropolitan statistical area. History Habitation of Coryell County dates as far back as 4500 BC. The Tonkawa, Lipan Apache, Kiowa, and Comanche were among the tribes who migrated through the area at various periods. When the General Colonization Law went into effect in 1824, followed by the 1825 State Colonization Law of Coahuila y Tejas, Robert Leftwich obtained a grant to settle 800 families in Texas. The grant went through several legal challenges, and later became Robertson's Colony, named for Sterling C. Robertson. The grant encompassed all or parts of 30 present-day Texas counties. The ''Handbook of Texas'' is a comprehensive encyclopedia of Texas geography, history, and historical persons published by the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA). History The original ''Handbook'' was the brainchild of TSHA President Walter Prescott Webb of The University of Texas history department. It was published as a two-volume set in 1952, with a supplemental volume published in 1976. In 1996, the New Handbook of Texas was published, expanding the encyclopedia to six volumes and over 23,000 articles. In 1999, the Handbook of Texas Online went live with the complete text of the print edition, all corrections incorporated into the handbook's second printing, and about 400 articles not included in the print edition due to space limitations. The handbook continues to be updated online, and contains over 25,000 articles.
