Eadith Campbell Walker
Dame Eadith Campbell Walker (18 September 1861 - 8 October 1937) was an Australian heiress and philanthropist. Life and career Eadith Campbell Walker was born at The Rocks, Sydney, the only child of Scottish parents, Thomas Walker (philanthropist), Thomas Walker, a merchant, and his wife Jane (née Hart). The family moved to their home, Yaralla, an Italianate mansion on the Parramatta River in Concord West, New South Wales, Concord West, an Inner West (Sydney), inner-western suburb of Sydney. Following the death of her mother, she was raised by her paternal aunt, Joanna Walker. She and her father carried out numerous charitable works in Australia. When the World War I, First World War came she took a special interest in returned soldiers suffering from tuberculosis, and had 32 of them at "The Camp" in the grounds of Yaralla Estate from 1917 to 1920. Rivendell Child, Adolescent And Family Unit
Rivendell Child, Adolescent and Family Unit is a mental health facility specialising in the problems of young people. It is located at Hospital Road, Concord West, New South Wales, Australia. The facility is housed in the former Thomas Walker Convalescent Hospital Buildings, Thomas Walker Hospital, which is listed on the New South Wales Heritage Register. Description and history Rivendell Unit was originally located at Broughton Hall, Lilyfield, Broughton Hall, Lilyfield, New South Wales, Lilyfield, before being relocated to Concord West in 1977. Its founding director was Dr Marie Bashir, later to become Governor of New South Wales. Dr Bashir was replaced by Professor Joseph Rey in 1988. The Dictionary of Sydney is a digital humanities project to produce an online, expert-written encyclopedia of all aspects of the history of Sydney. Description The Dictionary is a partnership between the City of Sydney, the University of Sydney, the State Library of New South Wales, the State Records Authority of New South Wales, and the University of Technology Sydney. It began in 2007 with Australian Research Council funding and launched on 5 November 2009. The Register of the National Estate was a heritage register that listed natural and cultural heritage places in Australia that was closed in 2007. Phasing out began in 2003, when the Australian National Heritage List and the Commonwealth Heritage List were created and by 2007 the Register had been replaced by these and various state and territory heritage registers. Places listed on the Register remain in a non-statutory archive and are still able to be viewed via the National Heritage Database.
