Ashley (singer)
Ashley Colón, nicknamed La Chica Bomba (b. October 27, 1975, in Puerto Rico), is a Puerto Rico, Puerto Rican merengue music, merengue singer. Mostly influenced by popular Puerto Rican singer and actress Iris Chacón, Ashley began her successful career as a member of tropical music, tropical band Las Chicas del Clan (The Girls of the Clan). Her debut as a solo artist came in 1997 with the release of the album ''Yo Soy la Bomba''. The hit song "Yo Soy La Reina" from Yo Soy La Reina, the album of the same name followed that same year. She performed with Elvis Crespo at the annual Tu Música awards ceremony. In 1999 ''Abrázame'', meaning "hug me", became her international breakthrough, supported by a Latin American and U.S. tour. In 1999 she released a Tejano music, Tejano album called ''Sabor a dulce'', followed by a greatest hits album in 2000 called ''Oro Merenguero''. She also released ''El poder de las mujeres''. Merengue Music
Merengue is a type of music and dance originating in the Dominican Republic, which has become a very popular genre throughout Latin America, and also in several major cities in the United States with Latino communities. Merengue was inscribed on November 30, 2016 in the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO. Merengue was developed in the middle of the 1800s, originally played with European stringed instruments ( bandurria and guitar). Years later, the stringed instruments were replaced by the accordion, thus conforming, together with the güira and the tambora, the instrumental structure of the typical merengue ensemble. This set, with its three instruments, represents the synthesis of the three cultures that made up the idiosyncrasy of Dominican culture.
