ENSEMS
Ensems (, meaning "jointly, at the same time") is an annual contemporary classical music festival that takes place every spring in Valencia. Founded in 1978, it is the oldest contemporary music festival in Spain. It centers mostly in chamber music due to budget restrictions. Works by composers such as John Cage, Elliott Carter, Brian Ferneyhough, Hans Werner Henze, Helmut Lachenmann, Krzysztof Penderecki, Salvatore Sciarrino or Iannis Xenakis have been given their Spanish premiere throughout the festival's history. Contemporary Music
Contemporary classical music is classical music composed close to the present day. At the beginning of the 21st century, it commonly referred to the post-1945 modern forms of post-tonal music after the death of Anton Webern, and included serial music, electronic music, experimental music, and minimalist music. Newer forms of music include spectral music, and post-minimalism. History Background At the beginning of the twentieth century, composers of classical music were experimenting with an increasingly dissonant pitch language, which sometimes yielded atonal pieces. Gabriela Ortiz (born 1964) is a Mexican music educator and composer. Biography Gabriela Ortiz Torres was born in Mexico City of parents who were folk musicians. She learned folk music at home, and then studied in Paris at the Ecole Normale de Musique. She returned to Mexico City due to the illness of her mother, and studied composition there with Mario Lavista at the National Conservatory of Music. She continued her studies at the Guildhall School with Robert Saxton, and with Simon Emmerson at the University of London where she received a PhD in 1996. After completing her studies, she took a position at the National School of Music at the National Autonomous University in Mexico City. She also taught at Indiana University in the United States. Music Ortiz incorporates conventional notation techniques in her compositions, which have contemporary, rock, African and Afro-Cuban influences. Philippe Hurel is a French composer of contemporary music and the artistic director of the Ensemble Court-Circuit. Early life and education Hurel studied violin, analysis, composition and musicology at the Regional Conservatory of Toulouse. Hugues Dufourt
Hugues Dufourt () is a French composer and philosopher associated with the spectral school of composition. Born in Lyon on September 28, 1943, Dufourt studied piano and composition at the Geneva Conservatory. Dufourt became co-director of the Ensemble l'Itinéraire in 1973 and founded CRISS (Collectif de Recherche Instrumentale et de Synthèse Sonore—Instrumental and Sound Synthesis Research Collective) in 1977. It was for CRISS that he composed in 1978–79 his best-known work, ''Saturne'', for percussion, wind ensemble, and electronics—a work inspired by Erwin Panofsky's analysis of etchings by Albrecht Dürer. His work ''Burning Bright'' (2014) also received five votes in a 2017 ''Classic Voice'' poll of the greatest works of art music by living composers since 2000. Many of Dufourt's larger works have been inspired by the paintings of artists as various as Brueghel, Giorgione, Rembrandt, Poussin, Guardi, Goya, and Pollock. Jagoda Szmytka
Jagoda Szmytka (born 15 January 1982, Legnica) is a Polish composer. She has attracted attention for her style of music, which uses elements not only of sound, but also of the sense of space and visual arts, and also for her new opera, ''Dla głosów i rąk'' (For Voices and Hands). She is a well-known composer in Europe and has been recognized abroad, winning numerous juried scholarships, including the Staubach Honoraria for Composition. Marcela Rodríguez (born 18 April 1951) is a Mexican composer. Biography Marcela Rodríguez was born in Mexico City. She studied the guitar and composition with Leo Brouwer of Cuba. She studied for a while in London, and then returned to Mexico City to study with Julio Estrada and Ma.
