EDPS
The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) is an independent supervisory authority whose primary objective is to monitor and ensure that European institutions and bodies respect the right to privacy and data protection when they process personal data and develop new policies. Wojciech Wiewiórowski has been appointed European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) by a joint decision of the European Parliament and the Council. Appointed for a five-year term, he took office on 6 December 2019. Regulation (EU) 2018/1725 describes the duties and powers of the European Data Protection Supervisor (Chapter VI) as well as the institutional independence of the EDPS as a supervisory authority. It also lays down the rules for data protection in the EU institutions. Peter Hustinx
Peter Johan Hustinx (born 1945) is a Dutch lawyer who served as European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) from January 2004 – 2014. Biography Legal career He trained at University of Nijmegen graduating in LLM in 1970, with further work at University of Michigan Law School. From 1971 to 1991 he worked at the Dutch Ministry of Justice in constitutional and criminal law and preparing legislation. He was general council of the public law division Dutch Ministry of Justice from 1979 to 1991. In 1986 he became a Deputy judge at the Amsterdam Court of Appeal. Article 29 Data Protection Working Party
The Article 29 Working Party (Art. 29 WP), full name "The Working Party on the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Processing of Personal Data", was an advisory body made up of a representative from the data protection authority of each EU Member State, the European Data Protection Supervisor and the European Commission. The composition and purpose of Art. 29 WP was set out in Article 29 of the Data Protection Directive (Directive 95/46/EC), and it was launched in 1996. It was replaced by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) on 25 May 2018 in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (Regulation (EU) 2016/679). Giovanni Buttarelli
Giovanni Buttarelli (24 June 1957 – 20 August 2019) was an Italian civil servant, who served as the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS). On 4 December 2014, he was appointed by a joint decision of the European Parliament and the Council. He was due to serve a five-year term in this position. Previously, he served as Assistant EDPS, from January 2009 until December 2014. He was also a member of the Italian judiciary with the rank of judge of the Court of Cassation. Before joining the EDPS, Buttarelli worked as Secretary General of the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali, the Italian Data Protection Authority, between 1997 and 2009. National Data Protection Authority
There are several National data protection authorities across the world, tasked with protecting information privacy. In the European Union and the EFTA member countries, their status was formalized by the Data Protection Directive and they were involved in the Madrid Resolution. This project is a part of the work of the International Law Commission of the United Nations. Wojciech Wiewiórowski
Wojciech Wiewiórowski is a Polish lawyer, university teacher and former National data protection authority, National Personal Data Protection Inspector in Poland. He currently holds the seat of European Data Protection Supervisor. He was born on 13 June 1971 in Łęczyca, Central Poland. In 1995 he graduated from Faculty of Law in University of Gdańsk. He obtained his PhD in law in 2000. In 2006 he entered public service, being appointed as an IT advisor to Ludwik Dorn, at the time the Ministry of Interior and Administration (Poland), Minister of Interior and Administration in Poland. In 2008 he took the seat of the chief information officer in this ministry. On 25 June 2010 he was appointed as the National Data Protection Inspector in Poland. Eurodac
European Dactyloscopy (Eurodac) is the European Union (EU) fingerprint database for identifying asylum seekers and irregular border-crossers. After the European Parliament approved the last EURODAC reform poposed by far-right party Vox (December 2022), asylum applicants and irregular border-crossers over the age of 6 have their fingerprints, pictures, and other biometric data taken as a matter of EU law, which discriminatorily considers biometric data as a "special category of data" just in the case of EU citizens. These are then sent in digitally to a central unit at the European Commission, and automatically checked against other prints on the database. General Data Protection Regulation
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a European Union regulation on data protection and privacy in the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA). The GDPR is an important component of EU privacy law and of human rights law, in particular Article 8(1) of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
