E. M. Wijerama
E.M. Wijerama, FRCP was a Sri Lankan physician and philanthropist. He was the first President of the Ceylon College of Physicians and former President of the Ceylon Medical Association. Educated at Royal College Colombo, he studied medicine at the Colombo Medical College and went on to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians after gaining its membership. A leading consultant physician of the General Hospital, Colombo, he was elected as President of the Ceylon Medical Association from 1947 to 1948. In 1967 was elected the first President of Ceylon College of Physicians. He donated his home in Colombo to the Ceylon Medical Association in 1964. Renamed ''Wijerama House'', it is the current headquarters of the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA), the most influential professional body in the country and is home to the Sri Lanka Medical Library, one of the principal medical libraries in the island. The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) is a British professional membership body dedicated to improving the practice of medicine, chiefly through the accreditation of physicians by examination. Founded by royal charter from King Henry VIII in 1518, the RCP is the oldest medical college in England. Ceylon College Of Physicians
The Ceylon College of Physicians (CCP) is a professional organisation for specialists in medicine in Sri Lanka. It is a non-profit organisation, and members contribute towards its activities voluntarily. Its specialities currently include cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, pulmonology, rheumatology and rehabilitation medicine. The college currently consists of over 700 members. Mission statement The CCP states that it is an academic body 'established for the purpose of enhancing the knowledge of Medicine, promoting postgraduate education in Medicine', and 'ensuring that the highest quality of medical care is delivered to the patients by educating future physicians of the country'. The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) is the professional association for doctors and surgical professionals in Sri Lanka. It is considered to be the oldest national professional organisation of medical professionals in Australasia. Royal College Colombo
Royal College, Colombo is a selective entry boys' school located in Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Started as a private school by Rev Joseph Marsh in 1835, it was established as the Colombo Academy by Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton in January 1836, as part of the implementation of the recommendations of the Colebrooke Cameron Commission (1833), and was the first government-run secondary school for boys in the island. The National Hospital of Sri Lanka (sometimes General Hospital) is a government hospital in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Founded in 1864 as the General Hospital, it is the leading hospital in Sri Lanka and is controlled by the central government. Sri Lanka Medical Library
The Sri Lanka Medical Library (SLML) is a library which was started in 1844 as the ''Colonial Medical Library''. Later the name changed to ''Ceylon Medical Library'' and then to ''Sri Lanka Medical Library''. It is the oldest western medical organization in Sri Lanka. The library still maintains a large collection of very old medical books and journals in their original form. Even today one could see some of the 16th century medical literature in this place. They are in their original print form. In this present era where everything is turning into digital technology it is really surprising that these original material is maintained in their original format. The library is in fact a ''Museum of Western Medical Practice in Sri Lanka.'' According to Ceylon Medical Journal the oldest medical book in the library is a medical book published in 1608. The Colombo Municipal Council is the municipal governing body of Colombo, the largest city and financial centre in Sri Lanka. It consists of a directly elected executive Mayor of Colombo, current elect is Rosy Senanayake, and 119 elected 119 municipal councilors. The council was formed in 1865, it first met in 1866 and derives most of its powers from ''Municipal Council Ordinance No. 29 of 1947''. Sinhalese people ( si, සිංහල ජනතාව, Sinhala Janathāva) are an Indo-Aryan ethnolinguistic group native to the island of Sri Lanka. They were historically known as Hela people ( si, හෙළ).
