E. M. Waller
Edmund Meredith "Nig" Waller (October 18, 1904 – June 4, 1988) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Middle Tennessee State University from 1934 to 1935. He also coached basketball and baseball there from 1933 to 1935. During his two-season tenure as basketball coach at Middle Tennessee State, Waller compiled an overall record of 9–2. His football record was an overall 3–14–1. Waller played quarterback under Dan McGugin at Vanderbilt University from 1924 to 1926. He was called "Nig" due to his dark complexion. He was coach when Middle Tennessee was first dubbed the " Blue Raiders." The 1924 Vanderbilt Commodores football team represented Vanderbilt University in the 1924 Southern Conference football season. The 1924 season was Dan McGugin's 20th year as head coach. Members of the Southern Conference, the Commodores played six home games in Nashville, Tennessee, at Dudley Field and finished the season with a record of 6–3–1 (3–3 SoCon). The 1933 college football season saw the Michigan Wolverines repeat as winners of the Knute Rockne Memorial Trophy as national champion under the Dickinson System. The unofficial east–west championship game, the Rose Bowl, was between Stanford (8–1–1) who was ranked behind USC and unranked Columbia (7–1). The Columbia Lions won the Rose Bowl game 7–0. Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders football program represents Middle Tennessee State University in the sport of American football. The Blue Raiders compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the East Division of Conference USA (CUSA).
