The Döderhultarn Museum ( sv, Döderhultarmuseet) is a museum in Oskarshamn, Sweden that exhibits the carved works of Axel Petersson Döderhultarn. General information Axel Petersson "Döderhultarn" (1868–1925) was a Swedish woodcarver. In the Döderhultarn Museum there is a collection of his work, with more than 200 wooden sculptures. Oskarshamn
Oskarshamn is a coastal city and the seat of Oskarshamn Municipality, Kalmar County, Sweden with 17,258 inhabitants in 2010. History Etymology Döderhultsvik was the original name before a town charter was granted in 1856. The name was then changed to Oscarshamn (meaning: Oscar's port) after the king Oscar I of Sweden. The spelling has later changed to Oskarshamn. Struggle for town charter The location of Oskarshamn was known as Döderhultsvik since the Medieval age. In 1645, the city of Kalmar, to the south, made a request to the Royal Government on holding commerce in the bay there, which was granted, giving it merchancy rights as a ''köping''. Axel Petersson Döderhultarn
Axel "Döderhultarn" Petersson, formerly Axel Petersson, (12 December 1868 – 15 March 1925) was a Swedish wood carver who was one of the recognized masters of wood carving, most famous for Scandinavian flat-plane style of woodcarving, Scandinavian flat-plane-style woodcarving. Early years Axel Petersson Döderhultarn was born in the parish of Döderhult in Oskarshamn Municipality. His parents were Eva Lotta Persdotter and Per August Petersson. When he was five years of age, his father died. Members of his family decided the best thing for him to do as a young adult was to emigrate to the United States. Petersson did not emigrate to America, as his family had planned, and after a brief time away he moved back to help his widowed mother in Oskarshamn. Harley Refsal
Harley Refsal is an internationally recognized figure carver, specializing in Scandinavian flat-plane style of woodcarving. Background Carver was born and raised on a farm near Hoffman, Minnesota, which was homesteaded by his Norwegian-immigrant grandparents. He began working in wood as a young boy. His father, a carpenter and farmer, and a woodworker uncle who lived nearby kept him well supplied with wood, tools, and encouragement. Career Refsal lived in Norway in the 1960s and again in the 1980s, and has traveled extensively throughout Scandinavia.
