Dési Von Halban
Désirée Louise Anna Ernestine "Dési" von Halban (10 April 1912 – 12 February 1996) was an Austrian opera and concert singer. She was the daughter of Austrian parents: operatic soprano Selma Kurz and gynecologist Josef von Halban. Life Dési von Halban was married to Dutch art dealer Jacques Goudstikker who fled the Nazis in 1940, but died on-board the ' while passing the English Channel. His wife and infant son, Edouard, made their way to New York City, via Montreal. His art collection was looted by the Nazis, and a group of 202 paintings was restituted in 2006, a decade after her death, only after a lengthy legal dispute. Halban remarried in 1950, to twice-divorced Dutch lawyer August von Saher. Her son adopted his stepfather's surname. He married Marei Langenbein, a West German figure skater. 2006 Goudstikker Restitution Of 202 Paintings
The ''2006 Goudstikker restitution of 202 paintings'' is a binding decision by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (Netherlands), Dutch Ministry of Culture on a WWII restitution case between the heirs of Jacques Goudstikker and the agency in charge of the Dutch National art collection (called Instituut Collectie Nederland). The 202 paintings are just a fraction of the property once owned by Goudstikker that was seized during the German occupation in 1940. After post-war discovery in Germany of much of the collection, it was returned to the Dutch State by the Monuments Men but despite repeated attempts by Goudstikker's widow, never given back to the heirs. To finance further recovery activities through provenance research, much of the 2006 group of paintings have since been sold by the Goudstikker heirs, and a few were bought back by the Dutch State. Hans Von Halban
Hans Heinrich von Halban (24 January 1908 – 28 November 1964) was a French physicist, of Austrian-Jewish descent. Family He was descended on his father's side from Polish Jews, who left Kraków for Vienna in the 1850s. His grandfather, Heinrich Blumenstock, was a senior official in the Habsburg Empire and was ennobled by Emperor Franz Joseph I in the 1880s, taking the name of Ritter Heinrich Blumenstock von Halban. The surname Blumenstock was subsequently dropped by the family, as was the use of 'von' after the Second World War. His mother's family was from Bohemia and his great-grandfather, Moritz von Fialka, was a colonel in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866.
