Dynastinae
Dynastinae or rhinoceros beetles are a subfamily of the scarab beetle family (Scarabaeidae). Other common names – some for particular groups of rhinoceros beetles – include Hercules beetles, unicorn beetles or horn beetles. Over 1500 species and 225 genera of rhinoceros beetles are known. Many rhinoceros beetles are well known for their unique shapes and large sizes. Some famous species are, for example, the Atlas beetle (''Chalcosoma atlas''), common rhinoceros beetle (''Xylotrupes ulysses''), elephant beetle (''Megasoma elephas''), European rhinoceros beetle (''Oryctes nasicornis''), Hercules beetle (''Dynastes hercules''), Japanese rhinoceros beetle or ''kabutomushi'' (''Allomyrina dichotoma''), ox beetle (''Strategus aloeus'') and the Eastern Hercules beetle (''Dynastes tityus''). Description and ecology The Dynastinae are among the largest of beetles, reaching more than in length, but are completely harmless to humans because they cannot bite or sting. So ...

Debeckius
''Debeckius'' is a genus of scarab beetles. It is monotypic, being represented by the single species, ''Debeckius beccarii''. It is native to New Guinea. It was previously assigned to the genus ''Beckius'', but that name was preoccupied by a fossil whitefish. Taxonomy The genus ''Debeckius'' is classified within the tribe Dynastini, known as true rhinoceros beetles. The following subspecies In biological classification, subspecies is a rank below species, used for populations that live in different areas and vary in size, shape, or other physical characteristics (morphology), but that can successfully interbreed. Not all species ... are recognised: * ''Debeckius beccarii beccarii'' (Gestro, 1876) * ''Debeckius beccarii koletta'' (Voirin, 1978) * ''Debeckius beccarii ryusuii'' (Nagai, 2006) References Dynastinae {{Dynastinae-stub Insects described in 2022 Insects of New Guinea ...

Megasoma
''Megasoma'' is a genus of rhinoceros beetles. Commonly known as the elephant beetles, ''Megasoma'' species are found from the southern half of North America to most of South America. Appearance ''Megasoma'' are generally large in size (as indicated by the name, which is "large body" in Greek). As a group, the genus contains some of the largest beetle species known. However, there are small species of this genus as well. The largest can be up to 135 mm, while small ones like ''Megasoma punctulatum'' can be around 20 mm. Many ''Megasoma'' species (''Megasoma elephas'', ''Megasoma thersites'', ''Megasoma gyas'', ''Megasoma cedrosa'', ''Megasoma anubis'', ''Megasoma occidentale'', ''Megasoma joergenseni'', ''Megasoma vogti'') have thin microscopic hairs (setae) covering nearly their entire bodies, giving the appearance of being pale or orange. Males of most species have large horns that they use to wrestle with other males. Females do not have horns. Diet Larvae feed on ...

Golofa
''Golofa'' is a genus of rhinoceros beetles. The name ''Golofa'' is the indigenous name used for these beetles in Venezuela, and was adopted as a genus name when originally described in 1837; the genus name is masculine in gender, following International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, ICZN Article 30.2.3.Hope, F.W. 1837. On the ''Golofa'' Beetle of Venezuela and its allied species. Transactions of the Entomological Society of London 2(1): 42–45. Dynastes Hercules
The Hercules beetle (''Dynastes hercules'') is a species of rhinoceros beetle native to the rainforests of Central America, South America, and the Lesser Antilles. It is the longest extant species of beetle in the world, and is also one of the largest flying insects in the world. Etymology ''Dynastes hercules'' is known for its tremendous strength and is named after Hercules, a hero of classical mythology who is famed for his great strength. Taxonomy ''D. hercules'' has a complex taxonomic history and has been known by several synonyms. It is in the subfamily Dynastinae (rhinoceros beetles) in the larger family Scarabaeidae (commonly known as scarab beetles). Not counting subspecies of ''D. hercules'', seven other species are recognized in the genus ''Dynastes''. Subspecies Several subspecies of ''D. hercules'' have been named, though still some uncertainty exists as to the validity of the named taxa.Huang, J., Knowles, L. The species versus subspecies conundrum: quantitative ...

Type Genus
In biological taxonomy, the type genus is the genus which defines a biological family and the root of the family name. Zoological nomenclature According to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, "The name-bearing type of a nominal family-group taxon is a nominal genus called the 'type genus'; the family-group name is based upon that of the type genus." Any family-group name must have a type genus (and any genus-group name must have a type species, but any species-group name may, but need not, have one or more type specimens). The type genus for a family-group name is also the genus that provided the stem to which was added the ending -idae (for families). :Example: The family name Formicidae has as its type genus the genus ''Formica'' Linnaeus, 1758. Botanical nomenclature In botanical nomenclature, the phrase "type genus" is used, unofficially, as a term of convenience. In the '' ICN'' this phrase has no status. The code uses type specimens for ranks up to fam ...
