Dutch Type Library
Dutch Type Library is a digital font foundry based in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, established in 1990 by Frank E. Blokland. DTL designs digital fonts and develops font software. Alongside original designs such as the Documenta and Caspari families, DTL has published work inspired by the work of Dutch type designers of the past, including revivals of the work of Hendrik van den Keere, Christoffel van Dijck, Joan Michaël Fleischman, Jacques François Rosart and Jan van Krimpen. 's-Hertogenbosch
s-Hertogenbosch (), colloquially known as Den Bosch (), is a city and municipality in the Netherlands with a population of 157,486. It is the capital of the province of North Brabant and its fourth largest by population. The city is south of the Maas river and near the Waal; it is to the north east of the city of Tilburg, north west of Eindhoven, south west of Nijmegen, and a longer distance south of Utrecht and south east of Dordrecht. History The city's official name is a contraction of the (archaic) Dutch ''des Hertogen bosch'' — "the forest of the duke". The duke in question was Henry I of Brabant, whose family had owned a large estate at nearby Orthen for at least four centuries. Hendrik Van Den Keere
Hendrik van den Keere (c. 1540–2 – 1580) was a sixteenth-century punchcutter, or cutter of punches to make metal type, who lived in Ghent in modern Belgium. Career Van den Keere was the son of Ghent printer and schoolmaster Hendrik van den Keere the Elder, and his career has sometimes been confused with that of his father. Both he and his father used the name "Henri du Tour" in French. Van den Keere's grandfather had taken over the type foundry of Joos Lambrecht. In 1566 he took over his father's printing firm, but soon gave up printing and began to specialise in punchcutting. From 1568 he worked particularly for Christophe Plantin of Antwerp, who operated a gigantic printing concern by contemporary standards. Van den Keere stayed living in Ghent, up the River Scheldt from Antwerp. He was Plantin's sole typecaster from 1569 onwards. Over the course of his career he cut around 30 typefaces. Christoffel Van Dijck
Christoffel van Dijck (c. 1600-5, Dexheim – November 1669, Amsterdam) was a German-born Dutch punchcutter and typefounder, who cut punches and operated a foundry for casting metal type. Van Dijck's type was widely used at a time when Amsterdam had become a major centre of world printing. Life Van Dijck was born in Dexheim, now in Germany, to a Dutch Protestant family. His father Gilbert Breberenus van den Dijck and half-brother Johannes were Calvinist ministers. Gilbert had come to Dexheim from Breberen (in the United Duchies of Jülich-Cleves-Berg). Christoffel was trained as a goldsmith. By 1640 he moved to Amsterdam as a journeyman. On 11 October 1642 he applied to marry Swaentje Harmens (c. 1600/1601 – 1668) from Nordhorn, the widow of former minister Jan de Praet. Joan Michaël Fleischman
Joan Michaël Fleischman (1707–27 May 1768, german: Johann Michael Fleischmann), was an 18th-century German-Dutch typographer and punchcutter. Fleischman worked in the Baroque period of design and his roman typefaces have been described as "transitional" in style, more stylised and sharply cut than was common before. Perhaps his most notable design was his complex music font, that was later used to decorate the edges of documents, including the first bank note of the Netherlands called the "roodborstje" or robin. Biography He was born in Wöhrd, Nuremberg, but moved to Amsterdam, where he worked for Izaak van der Putte and Hermanus Uytwerff before opening his own type foundry in 1735. Fleischman was unable to continue the type foundry on his own, and Rudolf Wetstein ran the business for him, while he continued to work for him as a punchcutter. Jacques François Rosart
Jacques François Rosart (1714, Namur – 26 May 1777) was a Belgian engraver and founder of metal type. Rosart operated a successful type foundry in Brussels after arriving in the city in 1759, and before that worked in Haarlem. His typefaces were in the "transitional" style, and he also made script typeface Script typefaces are based upon the varied and often fluid stroke created by handwriting.
