Dutch Kennel Club
Raad van Beheer op Kynologisch Gebied in Nederland (English: Dutch Kennel Club (DKC)) is the official kennel club of the Netherlands. Founded in 1902, it currently represents around 200 breed clubs with 150,000 members, and is a member of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). History The first dog shows in the Netherlands were organised by the Dutch Society of Agriculture, the first show taking place in 1892 in Rotterdam with an entry of 217 dogs. Later shows and field trials were also run by the Nimrod hunters' society, Cynophilia, and the ''Kynologenvereniging Nederland'' ("Canine Society of the Netherlands"). In 1902 it was decided to set up a new organisation, the ''Raad van Beheer op Kynologisch Gebied in Nederland'', to consolidate the dog registration and pedigree systems, and regulate showing and field trials. Kooikerhondje
The Kooikerhondje (Dutch for "Duck catcher's small dog") is a small spaniel-type breed of dog of Dutch ancestry that was originally used as a working dog, particularly in an ''eendenkooi'' ( duck decoy) to lure ducks. Kooikers were popular in the 17th and 18th century and appear in the paintings of Rembrandt and Jan Steen. The breed is gaining popularity in the United States, Canada and Scandinavia, where it is still relatively unknown. Description Appearance The Kooikerhondje is a small, flashy, orange and white spaniel-like sporting dog. Originally bred in the Netherlands as a duck decoy dog, its heavily white plumed tail waves jauntily to entice and lure ducks to follow it into Eendenkooi (elaborate manmade pond trapping systems). Dutch Tulip Hound
A Markiesje, also known as Dutch Tulip Hound, is believed to be an old dog breed. On several paintings dating from the 17th and 18th century a small, black dog resembling a Markiesje can be seen. However, the Markiesje - as currently known - has only been bred actively since the mid 1970s. The Markiesje was accepted by the Dutch '' Raad van Beheer op Kynologisch Gebied in Nederland'' as an official breed but it is not yet accepted by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. Wetterhoun
The Wetterhoun (translated into English as the Frisian Water Dog) is a breed traditionally used as a hunting dog for small game and waterfowl and native to the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. The name of the breed comes from the West Frisian ''Wetterhûn'', meaning "water dog." The plural of Wetterhoun is ''Wetterhounen'' in Frisian. The breed may also be called the ''Otterhoun'' (not to be confused with the Otterhound) or ''Dutch Spaniel'', although it is not a Spaniel- type dog. Appearance The Wetterhoun is a medium-sized dog, measuring at 55-59 centimeters (21.6-23 inches) at the withers and weighing between 25 and 35 kilos (55 and 77 pounds) at maturity. Stabijhoun
The Stabyhoun, or ''Stabijhoun'' or ''Stabij'' (in Frisian), is one of the rarest dog breeds in the world. It hails from the Dutch province of Friesland; its origins lie in the forested region of eastern and southeastern Friesland. The breed has been mentioned in Dutch literature dating back to the early 1800s, but it was not until the 1960s that the breed became known outside its native province; the first Stabyhouns left the Netherlands some decades later, in the 2000s. The name ''Stabijhoun'' translates roughly to "stand by edog". The dog is considered a Dutch national treasure. Today, there are only a few thousand Stabyhouns worldwide. Dutch Partridge Dog
The Drentsche Patrijshond is a versatile spaniel-type hunting dog from the Dutch province of Drenthe. Called the Dutch Partridge Dog (or "Drent" for Drenthe) in English, approximately 5,000 dogs are registered with the breed club in the Netherlands, and breed clubs operate in Belgium, Denmark, Scandinavia and North America. The Drentsche Patrijshond bears some resemblance to both spaniel and setter types of dog. An excellent pointer and retriever, this dog is often used to hunt fowl and adapts equally well to the field or marshes. Appearance Valid color is white with brown or orange markings. Dutch Smoushond
The Dutch Smoushond (''Hollandse Smoushond'', ''Dutch Ratter'') is a small breed of dog, related to the Pinscher and Schnauzer breed type kept in stables to eliminate rats and mice in Germany and the Netherlands. It is very rare and not well known outside the Netherlands, its country of origin. Appearance The ''Dutch Smoushond'' is small in size, at the maximum 10 kg in weight and 43 cm at the withers. Its waterproof coat is rough and shaggy, and of any shade of yellow colour. The characteristic shape of the head is broad and short, with drop ears set high on the head.
