Durazno Department
Durazno () is a department of Uruguay. Its capital is Durazno. Its name means ''"peach"'' in Spanish, referring to the department's peaches and its status as an agricultural breadbasket. It is located in the centre of the country, and is bounded to the north by the Río Negro and the Río Yi to the South. To its north are the departments of Río Negro and Tacuarembó, to it southeast the departments of Treinta y Tres, to its south the departments of Flores and Florida, while on its east is the department of Cerro Largo. History In 1827, while the territory was under Portuguese dominion, the Portuguese asked their ally, General Fructuoso Rivera to establish a military body of cavalry and artillery in the area of Paso del Durazno on the banks of Río Yi. Departments Of Uruguay
Uruguay consists of 19 departments (''departamentos''). Each department has a legislature called a Departmental Board. The ''Intendente'' is the department's chief executive. History The first division of the Republic into six departments occurred on 27 January 1816. In February of the same year, two more departments were formed, and in 1828 one more was added. When the First Constitution was signed in 1830, there were nine departments. These were the departments of Montevideo, Maldonado, Canelones, San José, Colonia, Soriano, Paysandú, Durazno and Cerro Largo. Cerro Largo Department
Cerro Largo Department () is a department of Uruguay. Its capital is Melo. It is located in the east of the country, bordering Brazil to its northeast with Yaguaron River as the natural border, Treinta y Tres Department to its south, Durazno Department to its west and the departments of Tacuarembó and Rivera to its northwest with Negro River as its natural border with them. Carlos Reyles
Carlos Reyles is a village in the Durazno Department of central Uruguay. Location It is located on the Route 5 on the spot where Route 4 splits off in a northwestern direction to Río Negro Department. It is about north of the city of Durazno. Cerro Chato
Cerro Chato (, ''Plain Hill'') is a town in central Uruguay that is divided in three parts belonging to Durazno Department, Florida Department, and Treinta y Tres Department. Location The town is located along Route 7, northeast by road from Valentines and southwest of Santa Clara de Olimar. Villa Del Carmen
Villa del Carmen or Carmen is a town in Durazno Department of central Uruguay, the third largest populated place in the department, after Durazno and Sarandí del Yí. Location The town is located on the intersection of Routes 14 and 42, about east of the city of Durazno. History Carmen was founded on 10 June 1874 by a decree of President of Uruguay, José Eugenio Ellauri. A principal contribution to the town's economic development was the carpentery industry, as well as the wines produced by André Faraud in the beginning of the 20th century.
