Durant School District (Mississippi)
The Durant Public School District was a public school district based in Durant, Mississippi, United States. The district served students in the City of Durant. Effective July 1, 2018 the Durant school district and the Holmes County School District consolidated into the Holmes County Consolidated School District. the superintendent was Edwin Robinson. It operated a single school, Durant Public School, with elementary and secondary divisions. History Gray Tollison, chairperson of the Mississippi Senate Education Committee, wrote SB 2494, which required Durant school district to consolidate into Holmes County's district; Tollison argued that the Durant district had insufficient tax revenues to operate. The Durant school district opposed the consolidation. The bill was opposed by Democrats and supported by Republicans, passing the Mississippi House of Representatives. Durant, Mississippi
Durant is a city near the central eastern border of Holmes County, Mississippi, United States, and Big Black River. The town was founded in 1858 as a station on the Mississippi Central Railroad, later part of the Illinois Central. Durant was named for Louis Durant, a Choctaw chief who had lived on this site before the United States undertook Indian Removal in the 1830s, forcing him and most of the Choctaw to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River. The population of the rural city was 2,673 at the 2010 census, down from 2,932 at the 2000 census. About 3 miles away is the Castalian Springs Hotel, believed in 2020 to be the only surviving such spa structure in the state. Dewey Phillip Bryant (born December 9, 1954) is an American politician who served as the 64th governor of Mississippi from 2012 to 2020. A member of the Republican Party, he was the 31st lieutenant governor of Mississippi from 2008 to 2012 and 40th state auditor of Mississippi from 1996 to 2008. A Republican, Bryant was elected governor in 2011, defeating the Democratic nominee Mayor Johnny DuPree of Hattiesburg. He was reelected in 2015, defeating truck driver Robert Gray.
