Dunleer Railway Station
Dunleer railway station is a disused railway station on the Dublin-Belfast railway line in Dunleer, County Louth Ireland. Opened by the Dublin and Belfast Junction Railway in 1851, the station was the major stop between Dundalk and Drogheda. The station survived longer than most following the rationalisation of the railway network, until it was closed by Córas Iompair Éireann in 1984. In the late 20th century, Dunleer's population expanded and it "developed into a local transport hub". As of 2010, the local Dunleer Community Development Board were calling for the railway station to be reopened. The National Transport Authority ( ga, Údarás Náisiúnta Iompair) or NTA is the transport authority for Greater Dublin and the public transport licensing agency for Ireland. It was established under the provisions of the ''Dublin Transport Authority Act (2008)'' and the ''Public Transport Regulation Act (2009)'', on 1 December 2009. The NTA took over certain functions from the Department of Transport and the entire role of the Dublin Transportation Office. It has also taken over the functions of the Commission for Taxi Regulation when Part 4 of the Public Transport Regulation Act (2009) commenced on 1 January 2011. Dunleer () is a town and townland in County Louth, Ireland. Dunleer is situated midway between Dundalk and Drogheda and is located on the junction of the R132, R169 and R170 regional roads that intersect the town. Dunleer used to be the principal Town Borough in the Barony of Ferrard and has a Charter dating back to 1252. History The town has ties to the early sixth century Christian monastery of Lann Léire. The monastery, which was located approximately where today Dunleer's Church of Ireland church is now located, suffered numerous attacks over its history and was finally burned to the ground in 1148. After a period of ruin, the Norman family of De Audley settled the area about thirty years later. In 1513, John Barnewall was knighted and received large grants of land in the Dunleer area, including the manor of Dunleer. The Great Northern Railway (Ireland) (GNR(I) or GNRI) was an Irish gauge () railway company in Ireland. It was formed in 1876 by a merger of the Irish North Western Railway (INW), Northern Railway of Ireland, and Ulster Railway. Drogheda MacBride railway station ( ga, Stáisiún Droichead Átha Mac Giolla Bhríde) serves Drogheda in County Louth, Ireland. Description The present station is located on a sharp curve on the southern approach to the Boyne Viaduct. Formerly there were three lines through the station between the 'up' and 'down' platforms, but when the station was refurbished in 1997, the up platform line was removed and the platform widened.
