Dundalk Clarke railway station ( ga, Stáisiún Dhún Dealgan Uí Cleirigh) serves Dundalk in County Louth, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It consists of an island platform, with a Bay platform, bay facing south. It is served by the Dublin-Belfast Enterprise (train), "Enterprise" express trains as well as local Commuter (Irish Rail), Commuter services to and from Dublin. There is a small museum located in one of the station buildings, displaying various railway artefacts and photographs. History The original station opened on 15 February 1849 as ''Dundalk Junction'' (being located at the Junction of the Dublin-Belfast line and the Dundalk and Enniskillen line), the current ''Dundalk Station'', 350m to the north, opened in June 1894. Dundalk
Dundalk ( ; ga, Dún Dealgan ), meaning "the fort of Dealgan", is the county town (the administrative centre) of County Louth, Ireland. The town is on the Castletown River, which flows into Dundalk Bay on the east coast of Ireland. It is halfway between Dublin and Belfast, close to the border with Northern Ireland. It is the eighth largest urban area in Ireland, with a population of 39,004 as of the 2016 census. Newry railway station ( ga, Stáisiún Iúr Cinn Trá) serves Newry and Bessbrook in Northern Ireland. The station is located in the northwest of Newry, County Armagh on the Dublin-Belfast line close to the Craigmore Viaduct. History The port of Newry was already a transport hub by 1742 with the opening of the Newry Canal to Lough Neagh. Development The company was founded as the Dundalk and Enniskillen Railway (D&ER) and opened the first section of its line, from to , in 1849. In Dundalk the D&ER line crossed the Dublin and Belfast Junction Railway main line, which was completed between and its own separate station in the same year.
