Dundee And District Tramways
Dundee and District Tramways operated a tramway service in Dundee between 1877 and 1899. History The idea for a public tramway network in Dundee was pioneered by the Dundee Tramway and Omnibus Company, and was authorised by the Dundee Tramways Act of 1872. However, they did not build the tramway themselves; instead it was built by the Police Commissioners, who then leased it to the Dundee and District Tramway Company, which had been set up in August 1877 to operate the system. It was built to the standard gauge of and designed for horse-drawn trams. Probably because the Act specified that the system had to be built in five years, and the deadline was rapidly approaching in 1877, the company hired two tramcars from Edinburgh Street Tramways and three from Glasgow Tramway and Omnibus Company in order to allow the service to begin on 30 August 1877. National Tramway Museum
The National Tramway Museum (trading as Crich Tramway Village) is a tram museum located at Crich (), Derbyshire, England. The museum contains over 60 (mainly British) trams built between 1873 and 1982 and is set within a recreated period village containing a working pub, cafe, old-style sweetshop and tram depots. The museum's collection of trams runs through the village-setting with visitors transported out into the local countryside and back. The museum is operated by the Tramway Museum Society, a registered charity. The trams at Crich mostly ran in cities in the United Kingdom prior to the 1960s, with trams rescued (even from other countries) as the systems closed. Most of the UK tram networks, with a few exceptions closed before the 1960s. Edinburgh Street Tramways operated a horse-drawn tramway service in Edinburgh between 1871 and 1896, and Leith between 1871 and 1904.The Golden Age of Tramways. Published by Taylor and Francis. Glasgow Tramway And Omnibus Company
The Glasgow Tramway and Omnibus Company operated a horse-drawn tramway service in Glasgow between 1872 and 1894. The tram system was then taken into municipal ownership, becoming Glasgow Corporation Tramways. History The Glasgow Street Tramways Act was enacted by Parliament in 1870. This legislation allowed Glasgow Town Council to decide whether or not to have tramways within Glasgow. In 1872, the Town Council laid a 2½-mile route from St George's Cross to Eglinton Toll (via New City Road, Cambridge Street, Sauchiehall Street, Renfield Street and the Jamaica Bridge). The Tramways Act prohibited the Town Council from directly operating a tram service over the lines. Thomas Green & Son, Ltd. were engineers who manufactured a wide range of products at the Smithfield Foundry, Leeds, United Kingdom Introduction Thomas Green came to Leeds from Carlton-on-Trent near Newark and founded the company in 1835. Dundee Corporation Tramways
Dundee Corporation Tramways formerly served the City of Dundee in Scotland. The corporation had financed the construction of a horse tramway in 1877, but had then leased it to the Dundee and District Tramways Company. They had replaced most of the horse trams with steam tram locomotives pulling trailer cars from 1884, but in 1897 the corporation decided that it would run the tramway system itself. After some negotiation and the payment of compensation, they took over the system in 1899, with a view to electrifying it. Electric trams started running in 1900, and the changeover was completed in 1902.
