Duncan MacArthur
Duncan MacArthur (May 29, 1840 – January 20, 1907) was a Scottish-born businessman, author and political figure in Manitoba. He represented Assiniboia in 1888 in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a Conservative. He was born in Nairnshire, the son of John Macarthur and Sarah Dallas, and was educated at the Free Church Academy there. In 1864, he was hired by the Hudson’s Bay Company and joined his brother Alexander in Montreal. In 1868, MacArthur succeeded his brother as senior clerk. He became manager of the Merchants' Bank of Canada in Winnipeg in 1871. In 1888, MacArthur helped form the North-West Fire Insurance Company and served as its first president. In the same year, he also became managing director of the Nelson Valley Railway, later part of the Winnipeg and Hudson's Bay Railway and Steamship Company. Commercial Bank Of Manitoba
The Commercial Bank of Manitoba was incorporated in 1884 and ceased operation in 1893. The president during most of its operation was Duncan MacArthur, a businessman and politician in Manitoba. It experienced financial difficulties during most of its years of operation and suspended payment in July, 1893 because of heavy withdrawals. It never resumed operation although it was later found to still be solvent. James Charles McKeagney
James Charles McKeagney (1815 – 14 September 1879) was a Canadian lawyer, politician, and judge. Born in County Tyrone, Ireland, he moved to Nova Scotia with his family in 1822. He was educated in Baddeck and at McQueen's Academy in Halifax. McKeagney was called to the Nova Scotia bar in 1838. He was first elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly for Richmond County in 1840 but his election was overturned on a technicality. McKeagney represented Inverness County from 1843 to 1847 and then Sydney Township from 1848 to 1851 and again from 1855 to 1859. In 1857, he was named inspector of mines and minerals. McKeagney was named Queen's Counsel in 1866. He was married twice: to Eliza Henry in 1842 and to Eliza Hearne in 1857. Kildonan (Manitoba Electoral District)
Kildonan was a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. The boundaries for the riding maintained their location through the 2008 redistribution. History Kildonan riding (1870–1899) The original Kildonan riding was created at the time of the province's establishment in 1870. It was dominated by Manitoba's "old settler" population (i.e., English-speaking families who had lived in the Red River Settlement for many years before the province's creation). There was a large "mixed blood" aboriginal population in the riding, and many of its residents were also of Scottish or partly Scottish ancestry. From 1886 to 1888, the riding was incorporated into "Kildonan and St. Paul" riding. John Norquay
John Norquay (May 8, 1841 – July 5, 1889) was the fifth premier of Manitoba from 1878 to 1887. He was born near St. Andrews in what was then the Red River Colony, making him the first Premier of Manitoba to have been born in the region. Early life Norquay came from an Anglo-Métis ethnic background (the contemporary term used was "Half-Breed", which was not then considered offensive and is even an important constitutional designation, given the rights afforded to them in the ''Manitoba Act''). He was educated by Church of England Bishop David Anderson and worked as a teacher, farmer, and fur trader during the 1860s.
