Dumfries Hibernians Football Club, also referred to as Dumfries Hibernian, was a short-lived football team based in Dumfries, Scotland. History The club was founded in 1897 as a footballing side aimed at the Irish community in Dumfries, and immediately entered the Scottish Cup, plus was brought into the Southern Counties League as a replacement for Thornhill, who withdrew before the season started. It had early patronage from two local Members of Parliament, Sir Mark MacTaggart-Stewart and Robert Yerburgh, as well as Lord Herries, the Lord Lieutenant of Kirkcudbright. The club's first match was a 5–5 draw against the 1st Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in September 1897, and its first competitive match was a 7–2 win over Newton Stewart Athletic in the first round of the Scottish Qualifying Cup in 1897–98. Dumfries ( ; sco, Dumfries; from gd, Dùn Phris ) is a market town and former royal burgh within the Dumfries and Galloway council area of Scotland. It is located near the mouth of the River Nith into the Solway Firth about by road from the Anglo-Scottish border and just away from Cumbria by air. Dumfries is the county town of the historic county of Dumfriesshire. Before becoming King of Scots, Robert the Bruce killed his rival the Red Comyn at Greyfriars Kirk in the town on 10 February 1306. The Young Pretender had his headquarters here during a 3-day sojourn in Dumfries towards the end of 1745. During the Second World War, the bulk of the Norwegian Army during their years in exile in Britain consisted of a brigade in Dumfries. Dumfries is nicknamed ''Queen of the South''. Grimsby Town Football Club is a professional football club based in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire, England, that in the 2022–23 season will compete in , the fourth tier of the English football league system, following the victory in the 2022 National League play-off Final. Nicknamed "the Mariners", the club was founded as Grimsby Pelham Football Club in 1878, changed its name to Grimsby Town a year later, and moved to its current stadium, Blundell Park, in 1898. Grimsby Town are the most successful team of the three professional clubs in historic Lincolnshire, being the only one to play top-flight English football. William Lee McAllister Miller (1875 – 13 August 1915) was a Scottish professional footballer who played in the Football League for Grimsby Town as a centre forward. Personal life Miller worked as a picture framer in Dumfries. Miller served as a corporal in the King's Own Scottish Borderers during the First World War and on 13 August 1915 was on board the troopship HMT ''Royal Edward'' when it was torpedoed by in the Aegean Sea. Palmerston Park
Palmerston Park is a football stadium on Terregles Street in Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It is the home ground of Scottish League One club Queen of the South, who have played there since 1919. South of Scotland League club Heston Rovers have shared Palmerston since 2013. The stadium has a capacity of of which 3,377 are seats. History Palmerston Park was first opened in 1919, when Queen of the South were formed, although football had been played at the site since the 1870s. The site of the ground was formerly a farm called Palmers Toun. This is on the Maxwelltown side of the River Nith in Dumfries. Jimmy McKinnell, Tom Wylie and Willie McCall were all sold to Blackburn Rovers around the same time by Queen of the South. This combined with the sale of Ian Dickson to Aston Villa helped to fund the purchase of Palmerston Park in 1921 for £1,500.
