Duco Van Binsbergen (December 17, 1936 – April 4, 2009) was a provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1993 to 1997. Political career Van Binsbergen was elected to the Alberta Legislature in the 1993 Alberta general election. He defeated incumbent New Democrat Member Jerry Doyle to pick up the seat for the Liberals. He ran for a second term in office in the 1997 Alberta general election but was defeated by Progressive Conservative candidate Ivan Strang. Late life Van Binsbergen sang as a Baritone in the Foothills Male Chorus after he retired from politics. West Yellowhead (electoral District)
West Yellowhead is a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada. The district is one of 87 current ridings mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first past the post method of voting. The district in its early history was a swing riding, changing party hands often. More recently, support has gone to electing candidates from the Progressive Conservatives, who have held the district with sizable majorities since 1997. The current representative is UCP Martin Long who was first elected in the 2019 provincial election. Ivan Strang (born June 1, 1940) is a former Progressive Conservative Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for West Yellowhead. He served as a member in the Alberta Legislature from 1997 to 2008. Political career Ivan Strang ran for a seat for the first time in the 1997 Alberta general election. He won by a comfortable margin over Liberal incumbent Duco Van Binsbergen to pick up the electoral district of West Yellowhead for the Progressive Conservatives for the first time since they lost it in 1989. The 1993 Alberta general election was held on June 15, 1993, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The Conservative government was re-elected, taking 51 seats out of 83 (61 percent of the seats) but only having support of 45 percent of voters. It is notable because it was seen by some as a contest between the former mayors of Calgary and Edmonton, Ralph Klein and Laurence Decore, respectively. The 1997 Alberta general election was held on March 11, 1997, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Ralph Klein's Conservatives were re-elected, with increased number of seats in the Legislature.
