Draughts World Championship
The Draughts World Championship is the world championship in international draughts and is held every two years. In the even year following the tournament, the World Title match takes place. The men's championship began in 1885 in France and since 1948 it's organised by the World Draughts Federation (FMJD). The men's championship has had winners from the Netherlands, Canada, the Soviet Union, Senegal, Latvia, and Russia. The current men's champion is Roel Boomstra. Since 1998, there is also a Draughts World Championship held with the blitz time control (5 minutes plus an increment of 5 seconds per move), and since 2014 also with the rapid time control (15 min + 5 sec per move). International Draughts
International draughts (also called international checkers or Polish draughts) is a Abstract strategy, strategy board game for two players, one of the variants of draughts. The gameboard comprises 10×10 squares in alternating dark and light colours, of which only the 50 dark squares are used. Each player has 20 pieces, light for one player and dark for the other, at opposite sides of the board. In conventional diagrams, the board is displayed with the light pieces at the bottom; in this orientation, the lower-left corner square must be dark. History According to Draughts historians, draughts historian Arie van der Stoep, the 100 square draughts board came into use in the Netherlands between 1550 and 1600, and the number of pieces was extended to 2x20 between 1650 and 1700. Anatoli Abramovich Gantvarg (russian: Анатолий Абрамович Гантварг; born 3 October 1948 in Minsk) is an international grandmaster in international draughts from Belarus. He won the Draughts World Championship The Draughts World Championship is the world championship in international draughts and is held every two years. Harm Wiersma (born 13 May 1953 in Leeuwarden, Dutch Frisia) is a Dutch draughts player and former politician. He is a six-time world champion in draughts and former MP. Biography In draughts he won his first Dutch championship in 1972, but had been known in the field since age 14. His first world champion title took place in 1976 and his last occurred in 1984. Ton Sijbrands
Teunis (Ton) Sijbrands (born 15 December 1949, in Amsterdam) is a Dutch international draughts player who became world champion in 1972. The next year, he successfully defended his title in a match against Andris Andreiko. In 1967, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1973 and 1988 he was the national Dutch champion. Sijbrands also had a weekly column about draughts in the Dutch national newspaper ''de Volkskrant'' and wrote several books about the game. He also made major achievements in simultaneous blindfold draughts. In 2002 he won 17 games and played 5 draws from a total 22 games, which equals a score of approximately 88%. On 18 December 2004, in the Dutch village of Lutten, Sijbrands improved the world record for blindfold simultaneous draughts. In this attempt that lasted 24 hours, he won 20 out of 24 games; the other 4 were draws, which equals a score of about 92%. Bolzano

Andris Andreiko
Andris Andreiko (17 October 1942 – 10 March 1976) was a three-time (1968, 1969, 1972) world champion and European champion (1974) in draughts. He also won eight national titles in 1961, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1970–1972, 1975. Death Andreiko was an alcoholic, and met Igor Vasenin during an afternoon of drinking. After the two had a drink in Andreiko's apartment, Andreiko fell asleep. Noticing his prize money and luxury appliances, Vasenin decided to kill Andreiko. He wrapped an iron with a towel, hit Andreiko over the head 17 times, collected what he wanted and headed for the door. Incidentally, Andreiko's wife Lyubov, who did not live with him anymore, arrived at his apartment shortly after his murder. Baba Sy
''Baba Sy'' was an African international draughts player and the first world champion from Africa. He is said to have been "discovered" by an American player visiting Dakar in 1959. In 1962 Germany organized a "big game/party", he was the only Senegalese and only African. He played against 150 players simultaneously spending few seconds per table. Several champions are part of the "big game/party" and he is declared the winner. By some accounts he is said to have beat each of the 150 players, in other accounts the results were 122 wins, 33 draws, and 5 loses. In either case, a remarkable achievement.
