Dragon Lady Comics
Dragon Lady Comics was a comic book shop in Toronto, Canada, owned by John Biernat. Founded in 1978 as a mail order company, Dragon Lady Comics was opened as a store the following year. Dragon Lady closed on 3 February 2012. The comics business reopened nearby on 8 February 2012 as the Comic Book Lounge and Gallery. Overview Dragon Lady Comics is named after the Dragon Lady character that appeared in Milton Caniff's ''Terry and the Pirates'' comic strip. The store opened in 1978 as a mail order memorabilia business. However, in 1979, a retail outlet was opened at 200 Queen Street West, tapping into the new direct market aimed at comic collectors. In 1979, owner John Biernat was interviewed by local CBC Television station CBLT for a news segment on "the comics craze" (airdate 23 June 1979). Direct Market
The direct market is the dominant distribution and retail network for American comic books. The concept of the direct market was created in the 1970s by Phil Seuling. The network currently consists of: * four major comic distributors: ** Lunar Distribution and UCS Comic Distributors (which distribute DC Comics since 2020), ** Penguin Random House Publisher Services (the distribution arm of the publishing company), which since 1 October 2021 distributes Marvel Comics and since 1 June 2022 distributes IDW Publishing (with Diamond switching to a Marvel and IDW wholesaler), and ** Diamond Comic Distributors, which distributes most, if not all, non-DC/Marvel/IDW comics (having exclusive deals with those publishers) * the majority of comics specialty stores, and * other retailers of comic books and related merchandise. The ''Financial Post'' was an English Canadian business newspaper, which published from 1907 to 1998. In 1998, the publication was folded into the new ''National Post'',"Black says Post to merge with new paper". Joe Shuster Awards
The Joe Shuster Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards (or Joe Shuster Awards) are given out annually for outstanding achievements in the creation of comic books, graphic novels, webcomics, and comics retailers and publishers by Canadians. The awards, first handed out in April 2005, are named in honour of Joe Shuster (1914–1992), the Canadian-born co-creator of Superman. The Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards Association is a not-for-profit organization formed in 2004 to administer the awards. Mark Askwith
Mark Askwith (born April 6, 1956) is a Canadian producer, writer, interviewer (and sometime-publisher/editor), and a familiar name in the fields of science fiction and comics. Early life Askwith was born into a military household on April 6, 1956. His family moved about before settling in Ottawa, Ontario, when he was six years old. Here, Askwith's mother subsequently ran a children's bookstore called the Bookery, through which he was able to gain access to a wide range of literature. He cites this exposure to all forms of literature – in particular ''The Adventures of Tintin'' album ''Explorers on the Moon'' and a "stash of superhero comics" – as a "pivotal event" in his young life, which clearly deeply imbued in him considerable enjoyment of such genres and titles. The Beguiling
The Beguiling is a comic shop in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It specializes in underground and alternative comics, classic comic strip reprints, and foreign comics. It has built an international reputation for focusing on and promoting non- superhero comics in the superhero-dominated North American comic book market. The store has made effort to promote comics culture in Toronto by organizing the annual Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) in coöperation with the Toronto Public Library, which also hosts Page & Panel, a nonprofit shop to support TCAF.
