Douglasdale is a residential suburb in Sandton, Gauteng, South Africa. It is located between the suburbs of Fourways and Bryanston. Often confused as a suburb of the Fourways District. The eight lane N1 freeway ( Western Bypass) forms its south eastern boundary. It is in Region C of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. History Douglasdale is built upon Douglasdale Farm, a large farm that was started in 1905 by Thomas Douglas and his wife Janet Alexander who both immigrated to South Africa from Scotland in 1890. They bought the farm on the Klein Jukskei River in Johannesburg and named it the Douglasdale farm. The farmhouse is one of the oldest homes in Sandton and was built in 1905. In 1930 the family started producing milk as a hobby and in 1940 they began to retail their milk producing over 240 bottles of milk a day, by hand. Jukskei River
The Jukskei River is one of the largest rivers in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is the southernmost river in the Crocodile River (West) basin. Course The Jukskei begins in Ellis Park in Johannesburg. Its original spring was on the former Doornfontein farm, which measured at 18,000 liters per hour, but has since disappeared under subsequent urban development. Now the first surface expression of the Jukskei is in Bertrams at the intersection of Queen Street and Sports Avenue where it emerges from a storm drain. From there the river flows through Bezuidenhout Valley and Bruma. It then meanders in a northerly direction through Bedfordview and Edenvale before flowing through Alexandra Township. N1 Western Bypass (Johannesburg)
The Western Bypass is a section of the N1 and the Johannesburg Ring Road located in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. Known at the time as the ''Concrete Highway'', the freeway was initially opened in 1975 as a route to avoid the city centre of Johannesburg and to provide access to the western areas of the Witwatersrand. From the south, the Western Bypass begins at the Diepkloof Interchange in Soweto, where it splits from the N12 freeway and ends at the Buccleuch Interchange, where it merges with the N3 Eastern Bypass, M1 South and N1 Ben Schoeman freeways. The Western Bypass is the longest section of the Johannesburg Ring Road. The freeway is mostly four lanes wide in either direction, but fans out into six lanes between Rivonia and Buccleuch, where there is heavy traffic moving north towards Pretoria. The N1 is a national route in South Africa that runs from Cape Town through Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Polokwane to Beit Bridge on the border with Zimbabwe. Bryanston, Gauteng is an affluent residential suburb of Sandton, South Africa north of Johannesburg . First named as an area in 1949, it was established in 1969 as a suburb of Sandton and provided with tarred roads and municipal service but after municipal boundaries were revised following the end of Apartheid, Sandton was merged with Johannesburg to form part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. The multi-lane N1 Western Johannesburg Bypass freeway forms its northern boundary with access at William Nicol offramp.
