Dorothy Wagner Puccinelli
Dorothy Wagner Puccinelli, also known as Dorothy Puccinelli Cravath (December 19, 1901 – May 24, 1974), was a New Deal-era artist and muralist. She was based in San Francisco, California. Biography Born as Dorothy Wagner on December 19, 1901, in San Antonio, Texas, at age five her family moved and settling in Half Moon Bay, California. In 1919, she enrolled at the California School of Fine Arts (now known as San Francisco Art Institute) and then continued in 1925 at the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design in San Francisco to studied with Beniamino Bufano. Her first marriage was to artist Raymond Puccinelli which ended in divorce. In 1941, Dorothy married Austin Cravath (brother of artist Ruth Cravath) and together they had a daughter named Anne. In 1937, Puccinelli created a 6′ x 8′ tempera-on-canvas mural called ''Vacheros'' at the post office in Merced, California. The mural was funded by the Treasury Section of Fine Arts. Ruth Cravath
Ruth Wakefield Cravath (1902–1986) was an American stonework artist and arts educator, specifically known for her public sculptures, busts and bas-reliefs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Biography Ruth Barrows Cravath was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 23, 1902 to Ruth Myra Rew and James Raney Cravath. In high school Cravath attended summer art classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. Cravath attended college at Grinnell College in Iowa for one year before moving to California in 1921 to join her family. She attended California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and studied with Beniamino Bufano and Ralph Stackpole. She learned "cut direct" sculpting techniques from Stackpole. Half Moon Bay, California
Half Moon Bay is a coastal city in San Mateo County, California, United States, approximately south of San Francisco. Its population was 11,795 as of the 2020 census. Immediately at the north of Half Moon Bay is Pillar Point Harbor and the unincorporated community of Princeton-by-the-Sea. Half Moon Bay is known for Mavericks, a big-wave surf location. It is called Half Moon Bay because of its crescent shape. Raymond Puccinelli, also known as Raimondo Puccinelli (1904–1986), he was an American sculptor and educator. He was active in his work in San Francisco, Baltimore, and Florence, Italy. Early life Raymond Puccinelli was born on May 5, 1904, in San Francisco, California, his early childhood home was on Jessie Street in the neighborhood of South of Market, San Francisco, South of Market. Works Progress Administration
The Works Progress Administration (WPA; renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration) was an American New Deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers (mostly men who were not formally educated) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. It was set up on May 6, 1935, by presidential order, as a key part of the Second New Deal. The WPA's first appropriation in 1935 was $4.9 billion (about $15 per person in the U.S., around 6.7 percent of the 1935 GDP). Headed by Harry Hopkins, the WPA supplied paid jobs to the unemployed during the Great Depression in the United States, while building up the public infrastructure of the US, such as parks, schools, and roads.
