Dorothy Howell (screenwriter)
Dorothy Howell (May 10, 1899 – June 8, 1971), was an American screenwriter active mostly during the 1920s and 1930s. Born to Elmer Howell and Carrie Lorenz, Dorothy was raised in Illinois alongside her younger brother Raymond. Raymond would go on to work at Hollywood studios as a technician, according to census records. Howell worked as a scenarist and screenwriter for Columbia for much of her career. She started out at Columbia as Harry Cohn's secretary and was appointed assistant general production manager at the company in 1926. Before joining Columbia, she had also worked as a secretary to executives Irving Thalberg and B.P. Schulberg. She was married to Mendel B. Silverberg, a prominent entertainment lawyer (who had previously been married to Alice Calhoun). Harry Cohn
Harry Cohn (July 23, 1891 – February 27, 1958) was a co-founder, president, and production director of Columbia Pictures Corporation. Life and career Cohn was born to a working-class Jewish family in New York City. His father, Joseph Cohn, was a tailor from Germany, and his mother, Bella Joseph, was from Pale of Settlement, Russian Empire. He left school early and had a variety of jobs, including chorus boy, fur salesman, pool hustler, shipping clerk, streetcar conductor and song plugger for a sheet music printer. He also appeared in a vaudeville act with Harry Ruby. He entered the film industry when he got a job with Independent Moving Pictures (which had recently merged to become part of Universal Film Manufacturing Company), where his elder brother, Jack Cohn, was already employed. ''A Fight to the Finish'' is a 1925 American silent drama film directed by B. Reeves Eason and starring William Fairbanks, Phyllis Haver and Tom Ricketts. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Jim Davis, a young man whose father has turned him out without a cent, is involved in a street fight and whips a man whom he learns is the state boxing champion in his division. Mary Corbett urges Jim to meet the champion in the ring and thereby win enough money to convince his father he can earn his own living.
