Don Wing
Donald George Wing (born 27 April 1938) is a former Australian politician. A member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council from 1982 to 2011, representing the electoral division of Launceston (briefly named Paterson), he was President of the Tasmanian Legislative Council, President of the Legislative Council from 2002 until 2008. Wing was also List of mayors of Launceston, Mayor of Launceston from 1983 to 1987. Wing was born in Ulverstone, Tasmania, Ulverstone, and was first elected to the Legislative Council on 22 May 1982. He is a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Tasmania and before entering parliament practised as a barrister. He has served as an Alderman of the Launceston City Council and as Mayor thereof; a path that was later followed by fellow conservative independent MLC Ivan Dean. Electoral Division Of Paterson
The electoral division of Paterson was one of the 15 electorates or 'seats' in the Tasmanian Legislative Council (upper house) from 1999 to 2008 when a redistribution saw it reverted to its original name of Launceston. The electorate itself includes most of the Launceston city area. However, not all Launceston suburbs are a part of Paterson some like Mowbray, Rocherlea, Ravenswood are part of the electoral division of Windermere. Others including West Launceston, Riverside, Trevallyn and Summerhill are part of the electoral division of Rosevears. The rest of the city falls in Paterson. The rural properties just outside Launceston at Western Junction and Breadalbane are also included in the division. Ivan Dean
Ivan Noel Dean (born 21 April 1945) is an Australian politician. He was an independent member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council from 2003 to 2021, representing the electorate of Windermere. He also served as Mayor of Launceston from 2005 to 2007. Dean studied at Levendale State School, New Town High School and Charles Sturt University. He also received training at the Tasmania Police Academy and the Victoria Police Academy. Dean worked as a farmer, as an officer in the Australian Army during the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation, and later as a police officer for Victoria Police, New South Wales Police Force and Tasmania Police, where he rose to the rank of Commander before being elected mayor of Launceston, on 31 October 2005. Dean faced criticism that it was 'irresponsible' to hold two positions in two separate government branches (a member of the legislative council and mayor). He also then receives two salaries.
