Dominican Sisters Of San Rafael
The Dominican Congregation of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, better known as the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, is an institute of religious sisters belonging to the Third Order of St. Dominic founded in California in 1850 to teach the children of the new American territory. They also operate health facilities. They are located in San Rafael, California. History Foundations When the California Republic became an American territory in 1848, the Holy See, under Pope Pius IX, followed Vatican practice and split the Diocese of California, which had covered Alta California, between the United States and Mexico. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake occurred on California's Central Coast on October 17 at local time. The shock was centered in The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park in Santa Cruz County, approximately northeast of Santa Cruz on a section of the San Andreas Fault System and was named for the nearby Loma Prieta Peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains. With an magnitude of 6.9 and a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of IX (''Violent''), the shock was responsible for 63 deaths and 3,757 injuries. Benicia ( , ) is a waterside city in Solano County, California, located in the North Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. María de la Concepción Marcela Argüello y Moraga, commonly referred to simply as Concepción Argüello, or "Conchita" , (February 19, 1791 – December 23, 1857) was an Alta Californian noted for her romance with Nikolai Rezanov, a Russian promoter of the colonization of Alaska and California. Biography She was the daughter of José Darío Argüello, the Spanish governor of Alta California and Presidio Commandante. She was born at the Presidio of San Francisco and at 15 she fell in love with Nikolai Rezanov, the visiting head of a Russian expedition to Alaska. His expedition had hard times in California and his involvement with Argüello was at first motivated by practical considerations, since the Spanish Crown did not permit giving aid to Russians. But the pair fell in love, and Rezanov returned to Russia to ask the Tsar for permission to marry Argüello. San Domenico School is the oldest independent, private, coed day and boarding school in California and the closest coed boarding school to San Francisco, California.
