Dominican Republic Davis Cup Team
The Dominican Republic national tennis team represents the Dominican Republic in Davis Cup tennis competition and are governed by the Federación Dominicana de Tenis. The Dominican Republic currently compete in the Americas Zone of Group I. History The Dominican Republic competed in its first Davis Cup in 1989. In 2010, the Dominican Republic reached Americas Zone Group I for the first time. The country once again reached Americas Zone Group I in 2012 after defeating Mexico in the final, with a 3-2 result. In September, 2013, the Dominican Republic maintained its Americas Zone Group I status after beating Chile 4-1 in the relegation play-off. In July, 2015, the team defeated Ecuador, and for the first time will face World Group play-offs against Germany on home soil. Víctor Estrella Burgos (; born August 2, 1980) is a retired Dominican professional tennis player. In 2014, Estrella became the first Dominican to reach the top 100 in the ATP rankings. He also became the first Dominican player to reach the semifinals in an ATP 250 tournament in Bogota. In 2015, he also became the first tennis player from his country to participate in all four Grand Slams, playing in the Australian Open. In February 2015, he won his first career ATP title at the Ecuador Open, becoming the oldest first-time ATP tour winner in the Open Era. The 1989 Davis Cup (also known as the 1989 Davis Cup by NEC for sponsorship purposes) was the 78th edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. This year's tournament saw the expansion of the previous World Group Relegation Play-offs round into the World Group Qualifying Round; instead of advancing directly to the World Group, the Zonal Group I winners would now join the World Group first round losers for a chance to compete in the following year's World Group.
